Al Braca was at work on the 104th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11. He was a vice president at Cantor Fitzgerald, a husband, a father, and a Christian whose faith had become deeply important to him.

When American Airlines Flight 11 struck the tower below them, Al and his coworkers were trapped. There was no way out. As smoke filled the building and the reality of what was happening became clear, people began calling loved ones and trying to understand what came next.

According to accounts shared by those who knew him, Al began praying with the people around him. In those final minutes, with fear and death closing in, he pointed his coworkers toward the hope he had in Christ. One line later attributed to him has endured:

“I’m going to Heaven. Who’s going with me?”

When Al was stripped of every earthly security, his thoughts turned to eternity and to the people beside him. Most of us will never face a moment like his. But all of us will eventually face the same eternal question: who is Christ? Where are we going after this whole thing is over? Is it really pitch black darkness?

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” (John 11:25)

Our greatest hope isn’t found in escaping death. It’s found in belonging to Christ when death comes.
