On this Monday of Holy Week, my thoughts go to the crowd Jesus encountered as He traveled into Jerusalem.
They shouted:
“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
And yet, Jesus knew that many in that same crowd who shouted blessings over Him would, just days later, be shouting for Him to be crucified.
That thought stayed with me after Bible study last night.
We only had four kids there. It had been a busy weekend, and I think most of them were just tired. But the lesson we taught was such an important one.
It was called “Who Am I, Really?”
The lesson talked about the labels we give ourselves, the labels other people place on us, and—most importantly—the labels that God gives us.
How does God see you?
He wants you to know:
You are chosen.
You were created with purpose.
You are deeply loved by God.
You are not a mistake.
You do not have to prove your worth to Him.
Because the labels you put on yourself—or the labels you allow others to put on you—do not define you.
They change.
Just like they did for Jesus.
One moment, the crowd cried out, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
And not long after, many of those same voices rejected Him and labeled Him something He was not.
Even the most important man to ever walk this earth had labels placed on Him.
But those labels did not change the truth of who He was.
He knew.
He knew He was chosen.
He knew He was sent with purpose.
He knew He was loved by the Father.
And because of that, He never let the voices of people become louder than the truth of God.
So when you hear that voice in your head whispering lies about who you are…
When your mistakes are thrown back in your face…
When shame tries to label you…
Remember where that comes from.
The enemy loves lies.
So replace every lie with truth.
God’s truth.
