What does it mean to be a Christian? Certainly, it means to believe in Jesus Christ; that he is the Son of God, that he was crucified and rose from the dead, and that he is the savior of all mankind.

But in today's Gospel, Jesus makes it clear that Christianity is about more than just believing in him. It is about becoming like him. "As the Father has sent me, so I send you." Being a Christian literally means being committed to the same mission of Jesus: bringing salvation to the world.

But can we, mere humans after all, truly carry on Christ's work under our own power? Of course, we can't, which is why he doesn't leave us alone. He sends us his very Spirit.

It is no coincidence that today, on Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate both the descent of the Holy Spirit and the founding of the Church. Why? Because they are inseparable. The Church's core identity is to be on mission, to evangelize, to spread the Gospel, and the Holy Spirit is the person who animates this great work.

So today, Holy Family, let's pray not only for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Let's also pray that we respond by carrying on Christ's mission.

Join us for a delicious Pentecost breakfast after 8:30 mass today!

St. Rita of Cascia had a pretty tough life: Her husband was abusive. When he was murdered, she was left a widow. Her two sons soon died of illness. And she was rejected by a convent before finally being accepted.

But amidst all of her suffering, St. Rita didn't become coldhearted. Instead, she turned to Jesus. So much so, that he bestowed on her a participation in his own passion: the stigmata, a visible wound from his crucifixion. St. Rita's forehead bore a wound from Christ's crown of thorns. It never healed--instead, she endured the pain from it for the rest of her life.

Through her suffering, St. Rita became extremely close to Jesus Christ. And now, she is known as an incredible intercessor; one who is especially powerful in the case of "impossible causes."

St. Rita has an important lesson for us, Holy Family: with Jesus, no suffering is wasted. With St. Rita of Cascia's intercession, let's use our difficulties as occasions to draw close to Jesus.

As Catholics, we know we celebrate martyrs, those who gave their lives for the faith. And today we have some great examples: St. Christopher Magallanes and companions, 21 brave priests and laymen who gave their lives during anti-Catholic persecutions in Mexico in the 20th century.

But what does Sacred Scripture say about martyrdom? Is the concept even Biblical?

In a word, YES. Jesus himself tells us that "blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:10)

And Christ is the perfect model of martyrdom: "A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (John 10:11)

In fact, Jesus tells his followers to expect martyrdom! "They will hand you over to persecution and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name." (Matthew 24:9)

And scriptural witnesses, like St. Stephen, attest to this reality: "As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.'" (Acts 7:59)

But we also know that martyrdom is not the end. In fact, martyrs are honored in heaven. "I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had borne." (Revelation 6:9).

So Holy Family, let's give thanks for all the great martyrs of our faith, and ask them to pray for us!

Jesus is the Son of God. But sometimes it helps to have some good branding to help spread devotion to him!

St. Bernadine of Siena certainly thought so. The 15th-century Italian friar painted the letters IHS — the first three letters of Jesus' name in Greek — on a tablet at the center of a burning sun. St. Bernadine brought the tablet with him when he preached, sometimes drawing crowds of 10,000 or more, and urging his listeners to venerate the Christ-centered monogram.

Not everyone was initially impressed. In fact, charges of idolatry and heresy were even brought against him. But Pope Martin V cleared St. Bernadine of any wrongdoing, and his IHS symbol is now a fixture in Catholic art, architecture, and popular devotion.

Not a bad bit of branding! But of course, it's all about leading people to Jesus. So why not join us in worshiping him at daily Mass this week? We'd love to see you there.

Monday - 8 a.m., Tuesday - 7 p.m. at chapel, Wednesday - 8 a.m., Thursday - 8 a.m. at chapel, Friday 8:30 a.m.

Today marks the start of National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week, a chance to honor and support those who provide 24/7 medical care in our communities.

Here at Holy Family, we want to do our part by praying for our EMS workers. But we need your help! If there's an EMS worker in your life, please feel free to mention their name in the comments below, and we'll make sure to remember them and their important work in our prayers!

Tonight at mass we celebrated an incredible group of our graduating seniors!

Your hard work, dedication, and perseverance have brought you to this milestone, and we could not be more proud of all you have accomplished.

Holy Family wishes all of you the best in your future endeavors. May God bless and lead you in all of your decisions.

When you think about it, Jesus' final instructions are pretty daunting: carry on the mission of God incarnate; the mission of one who can walk on water, command the seas, heal the sick, drive out demons, and who literally just rose from the dead.

You and I are not Jesus. And thus, being asked to carry forth Christ's mission of proclaiming the good news can seem impossible, especially when we consider where it led him: to the cross.

But the last part of today's reading is the kicker. Because Jesus doesn't send us out alone. In fact, he tells us that he will be with us "to the end of the age." And he is: through the sacraments, prayer, and community of the Church.

Yes, Holy Family, Jesus asks big things of us. But he asks us precisely because he is with us; a presence that makes all the difference. So as we celebrate the Ascension, let's prayerfully consider how we can respond to the call to be missionary disciples.

In the month of May, we're talking a lot about flowers. Believe it or not, they feature strongly in Sacred Scripture! Take a look:

-Jesus uses the lilies growing in the field as an example of how God takes care of creation (Matthew 6:28-29)
-The "rose of Sharon" mentioned in the Song of Songs represents beauty and desirability, and gives us a sense of the longing with which God looks at his people (Song of Songs 2:1)
-Almond blossoms sprout on Aaron's staff as a sign of God's favor and selection (Numbers 17:8)
-Hyssop symbolizes the purification we experience when we repent before God and are restored by his love (Psalm 51:9)
-And the prophet Isaiah points to the flower of the field as a symbol of human frailty and transience, and the need to be rooted in God.

Flowers may be small and seemingly insignificant, but God chooses to refer to them in his Word. After all, he made them! And their beauty, purity, and, yes, fragility, can help us reflect upon our own lives and our need for God. Let's hope that, through his goodness, our love of Scripture continues to grow here at Holy Family.
