ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE
Wednesday February 14, 7:00pm to 7:45pm
What Is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent, a church tradition marked by a time of self-examination and spiritual renewal, culminating in Holy Week. During the Ash Wednesday service, those who wish may have ashes placed on their foreheads to signify their own mortality but also to remind us of our great hope in Jesus Christ.
What Is Lent?
Lent strikes many Protestants as the exclusive domain of Roman Catholics, but this season can serve any Christian as a unique time of preparation and repentance as we anticipate the death and resurrection of Jesus. On the Christian calendar, Lent is the 40 days beginning on Ash Wednesday (Feb 14) and leading up to Easter Sunday (March 31). Sundays in Lent aren't counted, but generally set aside as days of renewal and celebration—"mini-Easters" of sorts. Lent invites us to make our hearts ready for remembering Jesus’ passion and celebrating Jesus’ resurrection. As a period of preparation, Lent has historically included the instruction of persons for baptism and profession of faith on Easter Sunday; the calling back of those who have become estranged from the church; and efforts by all Christians to deepen their faith, devotion, and readiness to mark the death and resurrection of their Savior.
