The Cemetery Committee cleaned up Cemetery 101 "Randall Angell Lot" (aka "Smith-Angell-Sly lot") located on Wallum Lake Road. There are two separate burial lots with a total of 26 burials. The first burial is of George W. Angell in 1811 and the last burial of George W. Sly in 1918. We skipped a few years from cleaning this one since we last cleaned it in 2017, however the cemetery is located in a nice shaded pine grove so the impact of growing vegetation was very light. Many falling branches and sticks and a good covering annual layers of pine needles. A few dead trees were also taken down to prevent future burial stone damage. Glad we finally made it out to this one for our Fall cleanups.

Two weeks back the Cemetery Committee cleaned cemetery BU102 the "STEPHEN WHIPPLE LOT" located off Gazza Road in the Village of Mapleville. After the cleaning a few members did some probing and were able to locate two additional missing graves and now the total burials in this lot is 12 instead of 10.

Found were the burials of

1. Smithfield, the son of Stephen & Mary Whipple death year 1830.

2. Lettice L., the wife of Dennis Keith death year 1814.

Last week a volunteer performed community service and cleaned up Cemetery 48 "CARY-BALLOU LOT" off Lapham Farm Rd. This cemetery generally gets two cleanings per year since it gets heavy vegetation growth with full sun and no trees to give it any shade. This cemetery has over 25 burials with two revolutionary war veterans. https://rihistoriccemeteries.org/newsearchcemeterycodes.aspx

Just to catch-up, back in April the Cemetery Committee was at it again for our spring cemetery cleanups. So far, the committee has cleaned up cemeteries #26 Riverside Lot, #12 Howard Lot, #100 Lewis/Croff Lot, #46 Cooper/Mowry Lot, and just this week the #45 Eddy/Harris/Taylor Lot/ #55 Rhodes Lots together were cleaned. We have many more to clean before the summer sets in and before we take a pause with our cleanups. We still have the following regular lots to be cleaned #17, #28, #48, #67, #78, #89, #94/ #95 together and many many more. We are always looking for more volunteers to join our group or if you know someone who needs to do any community service, please have them join us. We are behind schedule this year due to the weather and availability of our volunteers. Please send us a private message with your email contact information and we will reach out to you for our next cemetery cleanup. For equipment you will need a pair of loppers, a leaf rake or leaf blower, a weedwhacker if have one, a push mower if have one.

The photo below was from a visit this week to observe the burial stone damage done from a large tree that had fallen into #78 Inman/Joslin Lot. The committee will be back out to this cemetery soon to cut up this tree and to remove it from the lot. The burial stone will also be repaired at a future date.

We've been busy all spring and early summer so we haven't posted much. On Friday we cleaned up cemetery #130 a cemetery we found about 6 years ago up in Wallum Lake. We were back to clean it on Friday and to place a historical sign marker so we are happy to report that the cemetery has been cleaned and a sign has been added. Thanks goes out to Committee members Chris, Jay, Heather & Ron. Note the unbelievable stone walls which some could have been completed by the Youth Conservation Corps back in the day. One of the largest and straightest stone wall we've ever seen in town.

The Cemetery Committee restarted it's Fall Cemetery cleanups just a few weeks ago, this morning we cleaned up the Deacon Timothy Dean Lot (BU097). We haven't visited this cemetery in many years and it required a serious amount of work but we had an outstanding work crew today and within 2 hours our crew completed a very thorough cleaning. About 1 dozen trees also were taken down both within and outside the cemetery. Great morning, a then the rain came and we pushed through it to complete this cleanup. If anyone has an interest in volunteering for our fall cleanups please message your reply to this page. We schedule our cleanups on most weekend mornings from 8am to 12 noon on a Saturday or a Sunday depending on when most members can make it.
