The incident with the woman at the well is one of the most powerful moments in scripture. But we may have missed this one detail today. Immediately before telling the apostles to "look up," we learn that the whole town comes out to see Jesus. No doubt, as the Lord told his disciples to lift their heads, they saw a "field" of townsfolk in the near distance. This gives so much power to Jesus' next words about gathering crops for eternal life. As the St. Ann community, let's make sure we look around us to see the people who are ready to receive the Word, and serve them as Jesus served the Samaritan woman and her neighbors.

The early Church Fathers read a spiritual insight into this one simple verse: that this is the goal of the spiritual life. When we open ourselves up to grace, we give God permission to show us only him. The life of a disciple is about seeing "only Jesus" in every situation and acting accordingly.
