“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” -Matt 4:1–4

I have discovered that if I want to grow as a Christian, to truly live a transformative life, I will always have to push the boundaries of being comfortable.

Comfort doesn’t create growth!

Being comfortable for a long period of time is probably one of the most detrimental things a person can do. I know this firsthand. As a marathon runner, if I want to increase my endurance and speed, I must push myself. It doesn’t happen automatically. I wish it did. Initially there is discomfort and pain, but if I stay committed and push the boundaries, I will reach my goals.

In the same way, becoming content with our prayer life, Bible study, and daily walk with Christ will almost inevitably lead to spiritual stagnation. The longer we grow comfortable in our Christian routine, the more vulnerable we become to losing our spiritual zeal.

What’s the solution?

Jesus is the answer and we should follow His example (don't start with 40 days :))

In Matt 4 Jesus is lead into the wilderness where he fasts for 40 days. Fasting makes you uncomfortable. It tests us physically and spiritually, and yet, when it is paired with prayer, it helps us focus on God who is the giver of all that we have.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, nourish my heart with your truth today and deepen my love for you.

Happy are those who make the LORD their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods.

Hey Church Family,

Tomorrow is Sunday, and I’m really looking forward to seeing you. We’ve just started a new Bible study in the Gospel of Mark, walking carefully through each chapter and growing in our understanding as we go. I hope you’ll join us.

Enjoy your Saturday!
