Central Avenue Church

Central Avenue Church We are a healing and inclusive spiritual community for those hurt by religion and seeking the sacred.

We discuss challenging spiritual topics, reflect through progressive Christian liturgy, commune over food and drink, and serve our neighbors.

We know that church hasn’t always been a safe or welcoming space for everyone.

To those who have felt marginalized by religion, to q***r Christians who have had to hide parts of themselves, to the doubters, the science-lovers, and those wandering spiritually: you are fully welcome here, exactly as you are. 🌈

For the first three Sundays of June, we are diving deep into affirming, inclusive conversations around Pride and faith. We hope you can join us!

The Third Testament: Rewriting Faith Beyond the Bible. On a recent Sunday at Central Avenue Church, our Community Pastor Julie Davis reflected on attending a conference where clergy, scholars, and activists gathered to discuss Project 2025, Christian nationalism, and the future of faith in public life.

Drawing on the idea of a "third testament," Julie explores how Christians are called to pursue justice, compassion, and truth in a deeply divided world.

Head to our website to read or listen to Julie’s full talk on the topic (linked in the comments).

Some of our best church moments happen around a table. On the last Sunday of each month, we gather not for a service, but for a meal. Our next hosted Community Dinner is Sunday, May 31, 4:30–6:30 PM at Joselito's Montrose.

No agenda. Just community. We hope to see you there!

81 years ago, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed by the N***s. The German pastor, theologian, and anti-fascist dissident left behind prison writings that feel startlingly urgent right now.

In this talk, Pastor Aaron reads and reflects on Bonhoeffer's political theology, including his famous essay "On Stupidity," which argues that surges of power can stupefy entire populations, making people incapable of independent thought.

Sound familiar?

Bonhoeffer believed Christians had a moral obligation to resist fascism. His Confessing Church stood against the N**i regime when most of the church looked away.

The full episode on The Central Cast goes deeper, exploring fear, cult-like loyalty, book bans, anti-intellectualism, and how communities can hold space for people whose minds are changing.

This is the kind of conversation the Church should be having.
