Dear Preacher,
This week I am part of a UK Learning Experience in London. While walking the streets, we found this guy at St. Paul’s Catherdral. I wonder what John Wesley would be preaching to us if he were living in our world today.

Perhaps he would just say the same things in a new way. He would ask how it is with our singing. Are we lifting our voices together in resonance and with gusto so that our current debates are subsumed by our harmonies?

Are we providing care for those in prison/detention centers, and do we do the work to visit them and to set them free?

How is it with those who are facing poverty and hunger every day? Do we feed them? Do we demand fair and adequate wages from our governments?

How is it with our own bank accounts? Do we have an excess stored up while others have none?

I wonder what he would say to the political powers around the world that are leading us in what is harmful to the public and private sphere’s of life? I wonder how he would update his sermon on “The Catholic Spirit?”

I also think he might ask us how it is with our souls during this time when the earth is groaning her pain and the people are moaning their prayers? How are we tending our souls so that we can care for our world and our world’s people?

John Wesley would have a lot to say to us today. He might write volumes of new books or be pounding the podcasts with his thoughts. He is not here in his body anymore but his teaching follow us: Do good, do no harm, stay in love with God.

Now it’s your turn, our turn. Who knows how the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts might change our world for good? Tomorrow you’ll preach. And tomorrow I’ll pray…for you, for us, for our present and our hope. God is with you, so sleep in peace.

Yesterday, we joyfully gathered in Imperial Beach for the groundbreaking of the new IMPERIAL BEACH NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER and The Haven at Palm, on the former site of Imperial Beach UMC. This project has been in the works for 10 years already, tirelessly championed by Rev. John Griffin-Atil. When it opens in early 2028, the new Imperial Beach Neighborhood Center will create long-awaited facilities for community services that address food insecurity and homelessness, while an adjacent affordable housing community, The Haven at Palm, will provide 50 homes specifically for seniors.

UMN is joining the rapid response effort for more than 1,000 affected families in three to four municipalities in Dhading District by partnering with CIRDS, the same organization with which UMN worked during the 2015 earthquake relief response.
