Release the Prisoners!
2 Chronicles 27:1 to 29:36

“Listen to me and return these prisoners you have taken, for they are your own relatives. Watch out, because now the Lord’s fierce anger has been turned against you!” (2 Chronicles 28:11)

Ahaz, king of Judah, had turned to idols, so the Lord allowed the kingdom of Israel to defeat him in battle. Many soldiers died, and their wives and children were taken, along with great plunder. The prophet Obed warned the Israelite soldiers to send the slaves back home, so the soldiers obeyed by clothing and feeding them before their release.

Prisoners of war were often badly treated in ancient times. No international standard existed for prisoner treatment the way it does today. But God’s Word was clear that the prisoners should be treated with kindness.

Where the prisoners of war expected judgment and mistreatment, they instead received food and clothing and even a return trip home! Instead of judgment, they found mercy. Anytime you choose to extend mercy to someone when you could judge them, you are setting a prisoner free and pleasing the Lord.

Show the same grace to others that God has shown to you.

Restoration
2 Chronicles 24:1 to 26:23

John was excited when he received an inheritance check. He could pay off his car loan and credit card debt. However, his real joy was being able to contribute to an organization that helped broken families who were living on the street, transforming them through biblical counseling, parenting classes, and job training. His wanted to participate in the work God was doing in the lives of these people, so he gladly gave an offering to this ministry.

This pleased all the leaders and the people, and they gladly brought their money and filled the chest with it (2 Chronicles 24:10).

Joash, the king of Judah, commanded the people to pay their taxes and bring offerings to repair the temple in Jerusalem, pay skilled workers, and purchase the furnishings. All the people gladly responded and rejoiced because they could invest together in God’s project.

The Lord offers opportunities to participate in His restoration plans by placing on people’s hearts the desire to not only build a church or support a mission, but to help heal someone’s life.

God, help me invest in Your plan of restoration.

Family History
2 Chronicles 21:1 to 23:21

In recent years, more and more people have researched their family’s history through DNA testing. As a result, many people have reunited with birth parents, siblings, and cousins. The family tree can reveal stories that are pleasing, or ones that are shocking and embarrassing.

When Athaliah, the mother of King Ahaziah of Judah, learned that her son was dead, she began to destroy the rest of Judah’s royal family (2 Chronicles 22:10).

Joash, grandson of Jehoram and the king of Judah, learned firsthand that he came from a family in which his grandparents were murderers who tried to eliminate the line of King David. It was only because of his courageous aunt and secret protection of the high priest that Joash survived the massacres, allowing David’s dynastic line to continue as God promised.

A bad family history does not automatically lead to a bad life. You can choose to live for God regardless of what poor choices your parents or grandparents made.

Your past does not determine your future. Choose to follow God today.

God's Battle
2 Chronicles 18:1 to 20:37

“Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:15).

A vast army approached the Israelites. Alarmed, Jehoshaphat inquired of the Lord and proclaimed a fast for all the people. God’s responded by telling the Israelites to not be afraid or discouraged but to let God fight the battle. They responded in faith, singing praises to the Lord and watching as their enemies destroyed each other. Those destroyed enemies left abundant plunder for the Israelites to take back to Jerusalem for the victory celebration.

Your battles may include family conflict, addiction, financial difficulties, a broken marriage, or uncertainty about a decision you need to make. When trouble is on the horizon, God wants His people to seek Him and trust in His guidance and protection. The difficulties in life can provide opportunities for your Heavenly Father to show He is a powerful protector, worthy of praise.

God, help me face today’s battles with faith, not fear.

Here They Come
2 Chronicles 14:1 to 17:19

Many from Israel had moved to Judah during Asa’s reign when they saw that the Lord his God was with him (2 Chronicles 15:9).

At times, nonbelievers see the Lord’s activity in the lives of His people and approach believers with questions. Tired of a life of sin (even before they know what they’re tired of), they’re looking for something—really, Someone—who can make the difference in their lives. Be prepared to share to gospel with non- Christians who are attracted by God’s power at work in your life.

Jesus has given His people the task of telling every human being the message of His death and resurrection, God’s remedy for the sin that separates humanity from Him. This involves each believer sharing the gospel with friends and neighbors. It also involves the ministry of those who share the gospel full time. Christians are to go into the entire world (Matt 28:18–20).

Do your part to share the gospel, and thank God when nonbelievers make it easier by approaching you.

Wise Advice
2 Chronicles 10:1 to 13:22

Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers (2 Chronicles 10:8).

Rehoboam became king over Israel after Solomon died. At the beginning of his reign, he sought advice from the elders that had served Solomon. They advised Rehoboam to treat the people fairly and with a benevolent hand. But then Rehoboam asked for advice from some young men he grew up with. They encouraged the king to handle the people harshly.

King Rehoboam unwisely chose to follow the young men’s advice. This decision divided the kingdom and drove many to follow a man named Jeroboam.

If you want good advice, surround yourself with wise Christians and listen to them. You may not always agree, but you will find that adopting wise counsel keeps you on God’s path.

God, help me to listen to wise advice.

Bad Company
2 Chronicles 7:1 to 9:31

Solomon moved his wife, Pharaoh’s daughter, from the City of David to the new palace he had built for her. He said, “My wife must not live in King David’s palace, for the Ark of the Lord has been there, and it is holy ground” (2 Chronicles 8:11).

Although politically savvy, Solomon’s marriage to Pharaoh’s daughter signaled the beginnings of Solomon’s insensitivity to God. King Solomon later married hundreds of foreign wives who turned his heart away from true devotion to God. They worshipped other gods, and Solomon followed them straight into idolatry.

Believers must be careful what they allow into their lives and who they choose to partner with. The Bible says not to marry an unbeliever. But even close friendships can hinder faith in Christ.

Are your close friends believers? How do your friends impact you? How do you impact them? Consider your relationships carefully, because bad company does corrupt good character (1 Cor 15:33), just as it did with Solomon.

Are your close friendships causing your faith to grow?

So Now You Like Me?
Read Genesis 26:26–31

“He’s got to be kidding!” muttered Carl aloud, then quickly looked up from his bus seat to see if anyone had noticed. He continued the conversation in his mind as he checked his phone. After treating me like that, this guy actually sent me a friend request?

Carl is not alone. When others mistreat, misuse, or misjudge us, our first reaction is one of mistrust. It is good to be cautious of those who have hurt us before. A little initial skepticism is natural, as was the case with Isaac when some previously not-so-friendly neighbors came asking to be friends again.

Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?” (Genesis 26:27).

Isaac and these men were able to formally reestablish their relationship. As difficult as this might have been for Isaac, it was more important for him to be a part of his community than to go it alone. Good relationships with your coworkers, neighbors, or family members may require you to give up your natural mistrust.

Challenge for Today: Work toward rebuilding a relationship by extending grace to a difficult person.
