MEET GENERAL COUNCIL

Revs. Bill & Lisa Walker
Co-chairs for the General Board of World Missions

Bill was born in Sullivan, Indiana, and was raised by EMC missionary parents (Ron and Mary Ann Walker) in Bolivia. Lisa was born in Adrian, Michigan, to parents (Irvin and Faith Poucher) who were officers in the Salvation Army. They have two sons, Donovan and Josiah, and five grandchildren (4 boys and 1 girl). Bill and Lisa met at Vennard College and started ministering together then. They have served exclusively in the EMC for approximately 35 years in Iowa, California, Michigan, and Mexico (as missionaries).
They currently live just outside Athens, Georgia (since 2008), and love watching the Georgia Bulldogs play football! They continue serving as EMC missionaries and co-chairs of the EMC Board of World Missions. This ministry takes them to Mexico, Myanmar, the Philippines, Canada, and South Africa.
Lisa loves crafting, and Bill likes building things; they both love playing with their grandchildren! Because their missionary travels have taken them to many countries, they enjoy many types of cuisine. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but Bill always comes home to southern barbecue.
They are fulfilled in ministry when they see new believers discipled and churches grown. Bill enjoys teaching in the schools of ministry of the various EMC Global Conferences. Lisa’s favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11, and Bill’s is Isaiah 64:4. They hope to see the EMC (and the whole Kingdom of God) flourish around the world, and for our Global Conferences to work together and even send their own missionaries.
We are so thankful for Bill & Lisa and their passion for the World. They truly have a Great Commission heart and seek to make disciples of all nations. They do a fantastic job keeping all the Global Conferences connected. Their contribution to the EMC is invaluable and we thank God for them.

MEET GENERAL COUNCIL

Every four years, Pastors and congregants across the EMC gather at General Conference for a time of thanksgiving for what the Lord has done and looking forward to what He wants to do.
The General Conference is made up of credential holders and delegates from each local church body. Alongside of the foundational purpose of worship, fellowship, and Biblical teaching, there is time set aside to look towards the next four years of our denomination. We get to hear reports from each of the General Boards about what God has been doing in the last quadrennium. The election is held for the International General Superintendent, General Secretary, and the USA Conference Superintendents. Any proposed changes to our Discipline is also voted on during this time. At each of these conferences, people who have been nominated to serve on each the General Boards of the USA Conference are voted on. The chairpersons from each of these General Boards, the Cabinet of Superintendents, the General Secretary, and President of EMM and EMW all sit on the General Council. This council is elected by the General Conference to serve as leadership in our denomination for the next four years. We are thankful for the individuals that serve our denomination with integrity and purpose, always seeking the heart of God for His Church.

Over the next few weeks we will introduce you to the individual members of General Council.

The first Journey meeting is THIS WEEK! We look forward to these times of fellowship, encouragement, and teaching.
This year during each of the four sessions, we will be taking up a Missions Offering. The goal is to raise $45,000 collectively across all four Journey Sessions. 100% of what will be given at the Journey sessions will be invested directly into the ministry of our Global Conferences. Please pray and consider how the Lord desires for you to give.

During this Advent season, we prepare our hearts for Immanuel - God with us. The prophets foretold a Savior, a Messiah, one who would lead the people of Israel out of captivity. Whispers of His coming spread across generations as the people looked towards one who would break the yoke of their bo***ge, set them free, give them a HOPE and a future. Dare they believe these words their fathers had told them? There was a longing for peace, restoration, a yearning in their hearts for something more than what they had. They felt it deep inside them that there was something more. Could the stories of old be true? Could it be that there was a God who was truly faithful and kept Covenant? This Advent season, as we remember the fulfilled prophecies of the ONE who restores, we too can have HOPE, knowing that God is a God who fulfills his Word and keeps his Covenant with His people. The God who can make all things new and restores the broken. We can live with expectant HOPE.

O come, O come, Immanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel

O come, O Branch of Jesse’s stem
Unto your own and rescue them!
From depths of hell your people save,
And give them victory o’er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel
