Scripture:
2 Timothy 2:15 “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (NASB)

Observation:
In all the years of building houses and having a handyman business, I have accumulated a lot of tools - different hammers, saws, wrenches; the list goes on and on. Each tool purchased made the jobs I was doing easier. Some of the saws cut wood differently than others, different wrenches to fit this type and that type of use, even hammers to make driving the spikes in or finish nails in place. To be honest, since I have left those jobs behind, I have not gone through all the tools I have.

Maybe someday I will get around to that. Now I find myself using the best “tool” in life. That tool is the Bible, and it has become the book I enjoy reading and devoting myself to more than any other. It holds the key to making every job seem a little easier. Today’s verse speaks of being diligent - someone who isn’t ashamed and accurately handles the truth. I knew every tool I had when on the job site and how to use them accurately to get the job done. In order to do the job right of sharing Christ, we need to use the right tool. To go and make disciples, we need to use the Bible. What tool are you using to make disciples? I pray it is His Word inspired just for you.

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
2 Timothy 4:2 “…preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction…” (NASB)

Observation:
I remember a few years back, when I first accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior, I was sitting in a Bible study listening to people share scripture and other stories. I remember feeling as if I was a part of the group, but I had nothing to share. Although the Bible has been part of my entire life, I never took the time to fully understand what it said. After that meeting, I grabbed my Bible and read with a new passion. I wanted to know what it was all about.

How a young boy named David could slay a giant, how a river could suddenly wall up so people could walk through on dry land, or how a man like you and me could step out of a boat and walk on water, for a few steps anyway. The desire within me grew with each page I turned. Although my bookshelves are filled with this book and that, the Bible is my first choice. Every verse brings me newness of life or an answer to a longing question. In order to share the Word, we must first learn the Word. So I ask, “Do you know what it is all about? Are we spending time in God’s Word?”

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
Hebrews 10:25 “…not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” (NASB)

Observation:
As I entered in, I thought that I must be crazy. It was my first fire—a house engulfed in flames. I found myself walking into it, drawn in by the sense of responsibility to the job I was called to do.

Today's verse speaks of not forsaking assembling together. Maybe you have thought that going to a church or a home group where people gather is just crazy. You never thought you'd ever enter one of those, like me entering the fire, but once inside, I found myself doing the job I was called to do. You will too. Sure, it may seem kind of scary to walk into a place where you never thought you'd go, but you must get past the fear and past the "I'm crazy" attitude. When you do, you will find out that things aren't as bad as you thought. Heading into the fire was scary at first, but having other firefighters around to help made the difference, and there will be people there to help you enter that church or home group. Don't let fear stand in your way.

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
1 Peter 5:8 “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (NASB)

Observation:
My wife and son LOVE their chickens. Each one has a name, their own roost, and lots of space to roam freely and provide us with meat and eggs. The very thought of a predator hunting their chickens induces a lot of anxiety. So, as the man of the house, it’s my job to keep the predators at bay. One night, a large raccoon was spotted on our security camera in the barn. He was prowling around looking for a chicken. After a few nights of trying, I finally succeeded in capturing him in a live trap. This is the picture I took of him. He is now prowling somewhere else in a wooded area far away.

1 Peter 5:8 reminds us that our spiritual enemies, Satan and all his demonic allies, “prowl” like predators; hoping to find an easy target to attack. If we are not “of sober spirit” and on the alert, we are open to attack. Take time today to make sure you are walking closer with Jesus and are able to spot a spiritual predator before it gets too close.

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
Psalms 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (NASB)

Observation:
It kept flickering. I knew something was wrong. The light kept going on and off depending on how I touched the switch. As I pulled the light off the electrical box, I noticed that the ground screw was loose causing a bad connection.

Today's verse speaks of God's Word as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. If we aren't grounded to His Word, our path will not be brightly lit. Being men of God's Word means being grounded by it. It means the study of it, the deep meditation upon it, and taking it with us to light our path. Are we grounded properly so that we can work to the best of our ability? Maybe we need to work on our connection to Christ. That way we can shine brightly in a darkened world.

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
Psalms 25:4-5 “Make me know Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; For you I wait all the day.” (NASB)

Observation:
We should have listened. While hiking with a few friends, we came to a fork in the road. Not knowing which way to go, we sat for a while to think about what we were going to do. As we sat there, along one of the paths came another hiker. “Don't go that way,” he said, and then continued his journey. Thinking we knew better, we chose THAT path. It was filled with difficulties. After hiking for a few miles, we ended up at a dead end and had to retrace our steps. Ugh!

Today's verse speaks of asking the Lord to teach us His ways, to lead us in His path of truth. If we try to do things our own way, it only ends at a dead end, and then we have to retrace our path. The smart way to travel thru this thing called life is to take the advice of those who have gone on before us. Learning from their mistakes so we don't make our own. God speaks through others to help us find His way and path. Travel well my friends.

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
John 8:12 “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life…’” (NASB)

Observation:
Life without any light is a minefield of pain, inconvenience, frustration, and confusion. I am so glad that God created light. Without light I would stub my toe on every table and chair in my house, impale my feet on my son’s toys, and continually bang my head into things. Life without light would be horrible!

Imagine living without spiritual Light. Imagine living without any knowledge of who Jesus is and what He did for us on the cross. Many men actually know what that’s like because they came to Christ later in life. Maybe that describes you? Remember how miserable you were before the light of Jesus entered your life? Today, thank the Light for shining in your life. Then ask Him to help you BE a light to someone else, pointing the way to Him somehow. He will always answer a prayer like that!

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
Hebrews 13:17 “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch you’re your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you…” (NASB)

Observation:
You couldn't tell at first, but as the days went on, it became obvious. As a young boy, one of my chores around the house was to cut the lawn. The first time I did, I really didn't pay that much attention to the directions my dad gave me. I cut the lawn, put the lawn mower away, and went to play. As the days went on, you could see all the spots I missed. I didn't follow my dad's directions and the front yard looked rather horrible.

Today's scripture speaks of obeying our leaders and submitting to them as they keep watch over our souls and have to give an account. I can only imagine what my dad thought as the days went on and the yard looked worse and worse. The second part of the verse speaks of our leaders doing it with joy and not grief. I am sure I brought my dad some grief and it begs the question: Are those in authority over us able to give a good account of how we are doing our jobs? Are they filled with joy or grief in what we bring? Better yet, I wonder what God thinks of how we follow His directions.

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
Romans 2:5-9 “But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first; and also of the Greek.” (NASB)

Observation:
It feels nice when someone tells you, “Hey! Good work you did there.” Compliments are super important to lots of people. Those words of affirmation are life-giving sometimes. Have you ever “gone fishing for a compliment?” You know, when you try a little too hard to get your work noticed and praised.

Scripture tells us that our works on this earth are important, but that we should not seek the praise of others. Instead, we ought to submit to God in our thoughts, words, and actions and strive towards that day when the Lord will personally reward and compliment us for how we obeyed Him and His Word. What others did won’t matter to our eternal destiny. How much we yielded to the Lordship of Jesus Christ over us will be all that matters.

Don’t waste time judging others today. Yes, judgement for the evildoer is coming, as Romans 2 says. But not until the end of all things. With the time you have now, in this life, submit yourself to God, seek holiness, grow closer to Christ, obey His commands, share the truth (in love and compassion) with others, and strive towards that ultimate compliment when He says, “Well done my good and faithful servant!”

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
Matthew 6:10 “Your kingdom come. Your will be done. On earth as it is in heaven.” (NASB)

Observation:
While working on a job site, I watched the master carpenter. I wanted to be one someday; and I was surprised to see him sitting in his truck reading something one morning. I thought maybe the plans for the new house, but as I got closer, he was reading a Bible. When I asked him why he was reading his Bible, he said, “I always ask God for His guidance for my day.”

We cannot talk about ‘whose will be done’ without mentioning what Jesus told us. Most of the time, we pray to get God to do what we want or to get us out of a specific situation. Maybe, just maybe, we are in that situation for a reason - to learn how to trust Him more or to realize that there are many times when our plan is not the best thing but His will is. In fact, it should always be His will. It means surrendering all of ourselves to Him and His will. We don’t really like giving control of our lives to someone else though. Here was a master carpenter being guided by the “Master Carpenter.” Who guides you in the course of your day?

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.

Scripture:
Psalm 31:14 “But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord, I say, ‘You are my God.’” (ESV)

Observation:
We just didn’t get there on time. During one of the nights at the firehouse, we responded to a house fire where someone died. I struggled to find the reason why. Sometimes it’s during the difficult times of testing that we really need to trust in Him and allow His will to be done. It may be painful.

There may be tears, but do we really think our God, who loved us so much He gave us His Son, would want to hurt us in some way? He is a God of love, and He loves each of us despite our shortcomings. I had to accept that He is my God and learn to trust Him with all the details of my life – the good, the bad, the ugly, and during those times when I just don’t understand. Do you trust Him only when things go right, or do you trust Him in ALL circumstances?

Application:
1) Think about what you just read.
2) Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and insight.
3) Share this with someone who would benefit from reading it.
4) Make sure others see Jesus in YOU today.
