Thank you to everyone who made this year's United Women in Faith Rummage Sale such a success! This was not our largest sale, but we did really well; the total so far is $5,118, which includes a generous anonymous donation given specifically to support the sale.

Our thanks to everyone who donated our abundance of items, to the many people who worked throughout the week and stayed until every last remnant was boxed, and to our customers. Our thanks go as well to everyone whose yard carried one of our signs.

Every dollar supports United Women in Faith's programs for women, children and youth, both here in Park Ridge and around the world.

This Sunday, Pastor Scott Himel continues our series "Faith in Uncertain Times" with "Fear Not" (Isaiah 40:27–41:10). Isaiah speaks to an exiled people who are frightened of what comes next, and God's answer isn't that the danger is imaginary; it's a promise worth learning by heart: "Do not fear, for I am with you."

Doors are open. The United Women in Faith Rummage Sale runs today and tomorrow, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, in Jorgeson Hall and the Parlor at First UMC.

A croquet set and a birdcage are waiting, along with books, clothing, household items, toys and treasures galore. Furniture will not be available this year.

Sunday morning our Vacation Bible School kids led the All Ages Moment in worship, sharing what they learned during their three days together. Then the All Ages Choir — children, youth and adults side by side — sang together. Thanks to everyone who made VBS happen this summer.

This Sunday, Pastor Scott begins a new series, Faith in Uncertain Times, with "Scriptural Action" (Psalm 46; Acts 4:23–31). Psalm 46 was written while the nations were in an uproar, and it makes a startling claim about a God who "makes wars cease to the end of the earth," who breaks the bow and shatters the spear. The psalmist never asks to be moved somewhere safer; the refuge he describes stands right in the middle of the trouble.

That is where Scripture puts us to work. In Acts 4, a frightened church prays for boldness, the room shakes, and they go back out and speak. We will also meet K. H. Miskotte, a Dutch pastor who kept teaching the Bible in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam while he sheltered Jewish neighbors in his own home. What came out of those study groups wasn't patience; it was scriptural action in a time of war.

On Friday, August 14, VBS 2026 — Surprise Party! — closed with the story of Zacchaeus. Our children learned about God's love and the forgiveness that changes hearts. They went outside to see a sycamore tree like the one Zacchaeus climbed and learned about that piece of God's creation, then came back in for crafts, games and a snack built to look like a tree. Thank you to our leaders and volunteers for three joyful mornings.

Spring cleaning in August? We'll take it.

First United Methodist Church of Park Ridge is collecting donations for our annual United Women in Faith Rummage Sale, and your gently-used treasures are welcome. Bring us books, clothing, household items, toys and treasures of every kind, beginning Sunday, August 23. (No furniture this year, please.)

One small favor: price your items before you drop them off — clothing and books excepted — a piece of masking tape does the job. The Salvation Army's online value guide is a handy reference.

Every dollar raised supports United Women in Faith programs for women, children and youth locally and around the world.
