A representation of Susanna Wesley leading prayer/worship, sharing sermons, and discussing theology with her neighbors at home in the Old Rectory in Samuel’s absence. A slightly different one is used on the cover of my book, Mothers in Israel.

You have likewise a most admirable exercise for your patience, either in the dulness or frowardness of your little ones.
And some of these will learn from you, what is of the greatest importance, to know themselves and to know God. You must not, therefore, relinquish this station lightly; not without full and clear proof, that God calls you so to do. Meantime, bear your cross, and it will bear you.
Seek an inward, not an outward, change. What you want is only inward liberty, the glorious liberty of the children of God. And how soon may you enjoy this! Who knows what a day, an hour, a moment, may bring forth?' How soon may you hear the voice that speaks Jehovah near!
Why should it not be to-day? I am
Yours affectionately.
~ John Wesley (letter to Miss Bishop, 19 September 1773)

Sometimes [God] acts on the wills and affection of [people]; withdrawing them from evil, inclining them to good, inspiring (breathing as it were) good thoughts into them; So it has frequently been expressed, by an easy, natural metaphor, strictly analogous to ruach, pneuma, spiritus, and the words used in most modern tongues also, to denote the third person in the ever-blessed Trinity. But however it be expressed, it is certain all true faith, and the whole work of salvation, every good thought, word, and work, is altogether by the operation of the Spirit of God. ~ John Wesley (A Farther Appeal to Men of Reason and Religion)

My Soul shall live and die wrapt up in Him. I want to forget that I have a being and to know no existence but His… Lord correct me when I go astray! Unless my not speaking among the Brethren may be styled omissions forever. I have broke through that some time ago and are blest in speaking. I do not think it wrong for women to speak in public provided they speak by the Spirit of GOD. But at present I see myself just where I ought to be and just so employed. I think we want more abundant Life here. What a blessing it could be if the people in general were very simple & full of love. ~ Sarah Crosby (letter 1765)

We don’t have a picture of Sarah Crosby to share, but she appears in both of these books.

Thought by some to be the hymn Charles Wesley composed after his “strange palpitation” of the heart on May 21, 1738—

1 WHERE shall my wondering soul begin?
How shall I all to heaven aspire?
A slave redeemed from death and sin,
A brand plucked from eternal fire,
How shall I equal triumphs raise,
Or sing my great Deliverer's praise?

2 O how shall I the goodness tell,
Father, which thou to me hast showed?
That I, a child of wrath and hell,
I should be called a child of God,
Should know, should feel my sins forgiven,
Blest with this antepast of heaven!

3 And shall I slight my Father's love?
Or basely fear his gifts to own?
Unmindful of his favours prove?
Shall I, the hallowed cross to shun,
Refuse his righteousness to impart,
By hiding it within my heart?

4 No! though the ancient dragon rage,
And call forth all his host to war,
Though earth's self-righteous sons engage
Them and their god alike I dare;
Jesus, the sinner's friend, proclaim;
Jesus, to sinners still the same.

5 Outcasts of men, to you I call,
Harlots, and publicans, and thieves!
He spreads his arms to embrace you all;
Sinners alone his grace receives;
No need of him the righteous have;
He came the lost to seek and save.

6 Come, O my guilty brethren, come,
Groaning beneath your load of sin,
His bleeding heart shall make you room,
His open side shall take you in;
He calls you now, invites you home;
Come, O my guilty brethren, come!

7 For you the purple current flowed
In pardons from his wounded side,
Languished for you the eternal God,
For you the Prince of glory died:
Believe, and all your sin's forgiven;
Only believe, and yours is heaven!
