The earliest Christians did not travel the Roman Empire asking people if they wanted to “accept Jesus into their hearts.” Instead, they were busy announcing the supreme victory of the cross! The gospel wasn’t advice about how to escape hell someday. It was the royal proclamation that Jesus Christ had conquered sin, death, and the powers of darkness, had been enthroned as Lord of all, and had inaugurated God’s Kingdom.

The announcement itself demanded a response, not because it was an offer waiting for acceptance, but because reality had changed. Imagine a herald arriving in a city to announce that a tyrant had been overthrown and a righteous king now ruled. The herald wasn’t negotiating. He wasn’t making a proposal. He was declaring what had happened.

The call to repent was an invitation to change allegiance because the King had already taken His throne. Somewhere along the way, much of Western Christianity shifted from proclamation to proposition. Instead of announcing what Christ accomplished for the world, we began asking people to make a decision that would supposedly make it true for them.

The New Testament speaks very differently from this modern western framework. “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.” “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to Me.” “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” The gospel begins with what God has done, not with what humanity must do.

Faith matters deeply, but faith is our awakening to reality, not the creator of reality. The ancient gospel proclaimed a victorious King. Too often, the modern gospel presents a hopeful opportunity. Those are not the same message.

Saturday Evening Lord’s Day Preparation.

Tomorrow is the Lord's Day. This day of rest and worship is an island of "get to" in a sea of "have to". We have to go to work, pay bills, and answer to a thousand responsibilities six days a week. The Lord's Day is a day to hit pause and enjoy a day of Godward focus - glorifying Him and experiencing both the practical and spiritual benefits of this rest.

It is a day to be approached with love and preparation. The longer I am in the ministry the more clear it is to me that families (especially the men leading the family) benefit greatly when they hold up Sunday as a special day. It is not simply a second Saturday but a day of holy convocation and personal devotion.

Implement these simple Saturday preparations for a more peaceful Sunday (as experienced by a father of four littles who has to be at the church before everyone 😅)

1. Lay out church clothes and shoes. Its amazing how much time gets soaked up in the morning deciding outfits and finding shoes!

2. Pack Bibles, notebooks, offering, and children’s supplies. You know where your Bible is (you just used it today). Take a few minutes to gather all these items. Make sure the kids have their snack, crayons, etc. Restock the diaper bag.

3. Prepare breakfast and Sunday lunch ahead of time. One of our absolute favorite things is coming home from church to the wonderful smell of a full crockpot. A simple, high protein breakfast will help you and the kids be at the top of your game for church.

4. Fill the gas tank

5. Review the sermon text and pray for the preaching.

6.Pray for the congregation, visitors, and specific needs. Your brothers and sister are going through things you cannot imagine. Some of them only known to God. Pray that they might gather, be encouraged, convicted, etc.

7. Reconcile any unresolved conflict before worship.

8. Limit late-night entertainment and unnecessary distractions.

9. Go to bed early enough to rise without rushing.

10. Remind the family: tomorrow is the Lord’s Day—come ready to worship, serve, and rejoice.
