There is nothing new under the sun according to King Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes 1:9: “What has been will be again, and what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” So that means that everything in this life that we experience, God already has instructions and answers for so that we can hold fast to our faith. Thankfully, Jesus gave a key to His disciples in John 16:33: “I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

In this Christian life, we can allow the worries of the world, the fears of tomorrow, and the stress of this moment to take our eyes off of Jesus. Often, we forget to quiet our souls in His presence and allow the work of the Holy Spirit to produce the fruit of joy in our lives. In fact, I remember a time in my life where I allowed previous trauma to have such a stronghold over my mind that it crippled my joy—almost causing me to forsake the very assignment God had called me to because of the pain of the trauma. However, the Lord intervened! My heart had become sick, like Proverbs 13:12 says: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.”

The Lord showed me that I had allowed previous pain to determine my actions, my attitude, and even rob me of the fruit of the Spirit—especially joy. The Lord gives us more instruction in Proverbs 4:23: “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”

1 Thes 4:4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

Self-Control is being able to keep one's self in check. It’s not letting our circumstances cause us to lose control.
Self-control exhibits moderation, temperance, and discipline. It’s choosing, under significant pressure, to chase after the important instead of the urgent.
Self-controlled people show restraint and are not impulsive.

I John 1:3-4
[3] that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. [4] And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.

Do you have a real relationship with God? Do you read your Bible on days besides Sunday? You don’t have to understand every word, but just by getting in it intentionally you will grow into having a real Bible study life, a real prayer life, a real faith life. And this will enable you to have a real family life, a real single life, and a real married life.

That real fellowship comes from the real fellowship with God the Father through Jesus Christ. Fellowship means to connect and have in common. What do you have in common with God? Absolutely nothing. And that’s why He sent Jesus Christ—who was a real man who walked on earth, lived temptations, but never sinned—so that He could die on a cross so He could resurrect from a grave so you and me, as a man, a woman, a teenager, and a kid, could have a real relationship with God, who we have nothing in common with, through Jesus Christ who is our mediator to bring it all together.

What will be the result of this? That our joy may be complete.

The whole thing is about our joy. If you don’t live a real life for Jesus and you don’t ever share Jesus, fellowship with others, or fellowship with God, you are never going to experience real, complete joy. It is that kind of joy that luxuries, possessions, real estate, or fulfilling dreams can’t bring. At least not in a permanent fashion. The Holy Spirit is telling you and me that we have purpose and a relationship with God the Father through Jesus.

Acts 2:41-42
[41] Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. [42] And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

When we have a real relationship with Jesus, then we are going to have a real relationship with others, and we will want to make a difference everywhere we go, and not only with people we know, because we don’t have years to build up every relationship.

There are people who need a word of encouragement or just that you offer them some prayer. You will find them in simple interactions when you go shopping, sit at a restaurant table, watch your kids’ practice, spend some time in a waiting room, or even while waiting in line. You will see what they are going through and seize the opportunity to chat with them or even ask for their permission to pray over them.

What’s fellowship? Fellowship is a Greek word that means to share something or to connect. That’s why you have a fellowship hall in church where you can share a meal or share life with one another. We long for connection. So we have fellowship with one another and then fellowship with God.

I John 1:3 NKJV
[3] that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

It is still biblical to share your faith and tell somebody about Jesus: “I saw it and heard it. Jesus walked on this earth, died, and rose again. He is the way, the truth, and the life.”

The world is hurting like never before. People are so stressed out, burdened, and afraid. And we have Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. We can share Him with somebody.

A real experience can’t be kept in. You know Jesus is real, so you want to share Him with your friends in a way that’s loving and kind without being obnoxious. How can we make a difference in somebody’s life?

Pray. This is the first thing you can do for somebody. It can be for a person that you work with, someone you live around in your neighborhood, a friend, or a family member. Begin to pray for that person, “God, I’m praying for my friend and I’m asking that You just use me. Would You do something in his life and speak to him? He needs a real relationship with You.”

Care. What can you do to care for them? How can you encourage them? Bring them cookies. Write them a note. Bring them some balloons. Be with them in the hospital. This way you earn the right to be heard.

Share. Just tell them the wonderful news about Jesus Christ.

John 1:1-3
[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

John’s journey with Jesus was physical, but our journey is through faith. It would seem perhaps that John’s journey was easier, but Jesus said to John and the other disciples that those who have not seen and yet still believe are blessed and full of joy. Jesus told them that it was to their advantage that He would go away so He could send the Holy Spirit to dwell in their hearts. If you have trusted Christ as your Savior, the Holy Spirit lives inside of you.

Going to church is great, but have you had a real encounter with Jesus? Do you really pray? Do you talk to Him about the ordinary things in life? “Jesus, I’m nervous. God, I love you. God, I’m hurting. God, my marriage seems difficult. Lord, I’m so tempted by peer pressure. Jesus, I need you so badly right now.”

Are you living a real life with Jesus? Do you really look into God’s Word? When we read it, sometimes we don’t understand everything. It’s a difficult book at times. But it is of ultimate importance to be in it if you want to have a real encounter with Jesus. Because Jesus Himself is the Word of God. It is sharper than any double-edged sword. It’s able to pierce your soul and your spirit. It is alive and active. It doesn’t return void. And it always accomplishes what it desires.

Are you having real fellowship with Jesus?

I John 1:1-2 NKJV
[1] That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— [2] the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us—

When John wrote his first letter, one of his main goals was to counter the effects of a false teaching known as Gnosticism. Gnosticism was this thought that you had to have this special knowledge in order to connect with spiritual things. “Gnostic” actually means “knowledge;” a special knowledge. Gnosticism had this main tenant: Physical things are bad, spiritual things are good. Therefore, if everything physical is bad and everything spiritual is good, then Jesus Christ must not have been a real man walking the face of the earth.

But Jesus had flesh. He was real. You could touch Him and feel Him. So they said, “No. He can’t be the Christ if He was a physical man. We don’t believe that.” For them, Jesus had to be a spirit, but we have to be clear about this. The physical death of Jesus, the physical life of Jesus, the physical resurrection of Jesus—this is pivotal to our faith. The central aspect of Christianity is not just the teaching of the principles of Jesus. It is that Jesus Christ was a real man who walked on Planet Earth, who lived a life we couldn’t live, who died for our sins and came back to life again.

It says in Hebrews that He was tempted in all things, but yet He was without sin, so that He could pay for our sins. He really went to the cross. Real nails went into His wrists and feet. The crown of thorns really hurt and drew blood. The spear went through His side. He really died. He really resurrected from the grave. That’s why He said to Thomas, “Put your finger into my hands. Put your hand into my side.”

Why is this physical life of Jesus central to Christianity? Because you are a real person too. You are going to walk this life and will die one day. You and I needed a physical Savior who lived a life we couldn’t live, died a death we should have died, so that we could know that we will rise again and spend eternity in heaven with God. So John, from the very beginning of his letter, is saying, “I saw it. I heard it. I touched it. Don’t tell me He wasn’t alive. I was there.”

We all need a real encounter with Jesus. He is real. He. Today can be the day you ask Him to come in.

Eph 3:20-21 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

God is able.

This is the whole foundation of prayer. If he were un-able, we’d never pray!

Since God is powerful, capable, and sovereign, we can come to him with our prayers. We know that God is able because he gives from his abundant, overflowing, and unlimited resources (3:16).

Sometimes we incorrectly assume that God is a bit stingy or only has a limited supply of blessing from which he can give. These verses shatter those false beliefs!

A. W. Tozer reminds us that, “Prayer is not an assault on the reluctance of God”.

God is able. So able, in fact, that there’s nothing you can ask him that he can’t give.

Think of the biggest, most audacious, impossible prayer request you have. God can do it! He can do immeasurably more than all we ask or even imagine! This is not a promise that God will do whatever you want, but it is an incentive to ask the only one who can!

These verses leave little room for prayers with low expectations. Instead, we ought to be inspired to pray big, expectant, faith-stretching prayers!

Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The fact that we are (re)created by God means we have a divine purpose: to do the good things that God prepare for us long ago.

You have a divine appointment and purpose in this world.

For some this means a specific work that God has assigned you to do. But for all of us there is a general call to do good kingdom things like caring for the poor, loving your enemies, blessing your neighbour, serving people, and more.

What this means is that you are unquestionably valuable and important to God. You are his masterpiece, living out his divine purposes in the world!

Mark 16:9-11
[9] Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. [10] She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. [11] And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.

Jesus picked Mary Magdalene as one of the first to know the astounding news - “He is risen! He is not here.” She was the one “from whom He had cast out seven demons.” He showed no concern about how her reputation or social standing might make her a less credible witness to His resurrection - the news was there to be shared.

But Jesus’ disciples struggled to believe - not just once either! In fact, unbelief robbed Jesus’ disciples of immense joy and left them mourning and grief stricken when they could have been celebrating.

Often we too can lack faith when faced with a situation that challenges us, a person who is hard to deal with or a dead end that seems hopeless. Do we live with belief that God can act and that he is in control? Do we believe that his will will be done?

Jesus appeared to his unbelieving followers. He entrusted a huge and crucial mandate— tell the world the good news. And He gave them His power with this directive, to heal the sick and destroy evil, to demonstrate God’s love for all people, and to connect deeply in prayer with Him.

Today, ponder this: Is there a situation that you cannot see changing, or without hope? Where do you sit between unbelief and living in the hope and the good news of God’s sovereignty and His love, power and presence?
