May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. - Romans 15:13 (NIV)

Sometimes the smallest words are huge! Such is the case in this verse. Look at the words "as" and "so". These often used conjunctions (see mom I did pay attention in English class) are critical in understanding the truth of this thought.

God wants to fill you with joy and peace, but the little word "as" makes this conditional. We will not be filled with this joy and peace without our trusting in Him. Here's the deal. If you are not trusting Him as the source of joy and peace, you WILL BE trusting something else. And the reason we don't find lasting joy and peace is that those other things just can't deliver!

But another reason we don't have joy and peace comes after the "so" conjunction. Again, here's the deal. We will not have lasting joy and peace if we are unwilling to share that joy and peace. So, you may be scratching your head here, but stay with me. If you are overflowing with hope, what happens with the over flow? it gets all over others!

Over the last few years, we have all seen an assault on own joy and peace. People are asking each other, "how are you doing". Of course, most say, "I'm good". That's what you're supposed to say right? But the truth is WE CAN BE GOOD, because God is still on the throne. God is still a redeeming God. God is still the God of Peace.

I do really believe what I preach. Does this mean some of these current circumstances don't sting or irritate? Of course not. Does this mean I'm OK with so many people struggling? No - it's not OK. But this in no way diminishes the truth of God's word or the reality of His presence.

So this has been my prayer. God use this for your glory. God help everyone affected by these crazy times see your power and grace. And in some way, allow the overflow of the hope I have help someone who desperately needs it.

Your job is to speak out on the things that make for solid doctrine. Guide older men into lives of temperance, dignity, and wisdom, into healthy faith, love, and endurance. Guide older women into lives of reverence so they end up as neither gossips nor drunks, but models of goodness. By looking at them, the younger women will know how to love their husbands and children, be virtuous and pure, keep a good house, be good wives. We don’t want anyone looking down on God’s Message because of their behavior. Also, guide the young men to live disciplined lives. - Titus 2:1-6 (MSG)

Sometimes at dinner Melody or I will look down and see that we have "friends" watching us. Our "friends" were Max (our Yorkie) and Raven (our daughters dog). Max had been conditioned over the years by our grandchildren that sometimes "goodies fall from the sky" when it's dinner time. So they sit there watching our every bite, looking for something to come their way.

Our passage today reminded me of my two canine scavengers. You see whether we think about it or not, other people are watching us. They are seeing how we act in a variety of situations. As believers we are called to be examples to those who might be seeing us live out our lives of faith.

Paul hits this message on the head when he writes, "We don’t want anyone looking down on God’s Message because of our behavior." We may not always see it or even think about it, but each of us have "friends watching our every move", what will these "friends" learn from us about following Christ?

Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. - Psalm 97:10 (NIV)

We've heard it said, "Hate the sin, love the sinner". And while this verse supports that idea, too many church folk seem to ignore it. And they seem to be on both ends of the spectrum in their ignorance.

One one end of the spectrum those seemingly trying to make the church more appealing, are simply re-writing Scripture to take out the parts where God says certain things are sinful. On the opposite end folks like the late Fred Phelps, spew hate at sinners they deem especially bad. But before we get too loud with our Amens (thankful that we are not like the others), let's take inventory.

Just how much do we hate sin? What are we doing in our communities to reach out to those ravaged by it? Do we simply look down our noses at the single baby momma or do we reach out in love to show her the hope of Jesus? Are we building relationships with people who might shock our system a little without embracing their choices? Are we reaching out to the homeless, even though their situation is often the consequence of their addiction? And again in all these situations are we doing it with the right balance?

Many of our benevolent efforts are to make us feel good, much like "survivor's guilt". But have very little benefit in really dealing with the deep rooted spiritual bankruptcy that is plaguing the masses.

Are we boldly declaring the truth that we are all sinners and without Christ will face eternity separated from God? Jesus gave us the perfect example. He hung out with sinners without compromising His message. And the reason He was successful was that He did hate the sin, but loved the sinner.

We announce the message about Christ, and we use all our wisdom to warn and teach everyone, so that all of Christ’s followers will grow and become mature. - Colossians 1:28 (CEV)

God not only wants a relationship with us, He also wants us to grow to maturity in Christ. So here's a few questions to ponder?

Is my church helping me grow into maturity or simply giving me socially pleasing platitudes?

Are my friends helping me be more like Jesus or less?

Am I helping my friends and family be more like Jesus or would they be better off to follow another example?

Who am I sharing the message with?

If not, who will?

When we learn what it means to live in His presences it is incredibly liberating. Seek that path and stay on it!

Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:18-20T (MSG)

Have you seen any of the "they only had one job" pictures? Maybe on FB or in an e-mail. You know the ones. A dead possum that was painted over by the crew painting lines on the road. Or the stop sign spelled "sotp"? How about pretty much any trip to a fast food place? You have a pretty good chance that something in your order will be wrong? And you are left thinking, that guy only had ONE JOB!

Well consider this, as the church, Jesus left us ONE JOB. It is not to build big buildings, put on high tech shows, or be politically correct. Now I'm not saying the being creative or using nice facilities is wrong, it's wrong when we forget that we had ONE JOB!
So how are we doing with the ONE JOB, Jesus left us to do?

Who are we training?

Who are we baptizing?

Now follow the example of the correct teaching I gave you, and let the faith and love of Christ Jesus be your model. You have been trusted with a wonderful treasure. Guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit, who lives within you. - 2 Timothy 1:13-14 (CEV)

What do you believe? Why do you believe it? How does that stack up with the ever changing beliefs in the world?

You and I have access to the real truth. We need to learn it, trust it, and hang on to it. And God gave us the Holy Spirit to help us accomplish just that.

Because of our sin nature we all have a defiant nature. Just like the strong willed child, we want what we want and don't need anyone telling us what to do!

But also, like any good parent, God's rules for His children are not just arbitrary mandates to make life miserable. Rather He teaches us things that will make our life richer and better.

So we need to choose. Are we going to follow the little voice of the defiant brat living in each of us, or the loving voice of God who has infinite wisdom?
