Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Being poor in spirit is knowing God is the source of everything, not yourself. We must be dependent on Him!

Careful words make for a careful life; careless talk may ruin everything. - Proverbs 13:3 (MSG)

Lipping off to the wrong person can give you more trouble than you want. Confidential information discussed with the wrong person can put you in the unemployment line or even jail. Careless speech can lead you to marital disharmony.

But more than any of this, careless talk can ruin your testimony with non believers. And in our day and time it's not just about what you say, but also about you put out there electronically.

So before you speak or hit "send", give your words a 2nd or maybe even a 3rd consideration. Don't let a word spoken in anger or without concern for the consequences cause more damage than you could imagine!

God, it seems you’ve been our home forever; long before the mountains were born, Long before you brought earth itself to birth, from “once upon a time” to “kingdom come”—you are God. - Psalm 90:2 (MSG)

God has been there...

God is still there....

God will continue to be there.... for you and for me.

And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high his love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God himself. - Ephesians 3:17-19 (TLB)

Read over this a few times. Let is sink in.

It is in understanding just how much God loves us we find true liberation. Too many are trying to earn this love - YOU CAN'T. It is in understanding this love that we find the right motivation to live as disciples.

Now, read over it a few more times. Ask God to reveal to you just how much love He has for you!

We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross, because he knew that later on he would be glad he did. Now he is seated at the right side of God’s throne! - Hebrews 12:2 (CEV)

When I read this verse this morning the very first thought to come to mind was the phrase "keep on keeping on". Now I realize that the meanings of phrases change over the years and this might mean something different to some folks. But for me, it means keep at it, keep doing what you are doing, stay with it, etc.

I certainly believe that is what the writer of Hebrews is saying. At least to those who are following Jesus. He is saying stay focused, don't get distracted by the trials and conflicts around you. And he is crystal clear on what we are to stay focused on - JESUS. Not only is he the author of our faith - he is the one who is making that faith complete.

Folks ask all the time, "how do I grow in my faith?" "How do I become Spiritually mature?" Well this verse is the key. Ask yourself, "How did you become a Christ-Follower? Was it through good works? NO! Was it through some religious affiliation? NO! Was it because your parents were believers? NO! It was because you came to the place where you realized you were totally separated from God because of sin and that Jesus Christ was your ONLY option. In faith, you came to Him and accepted his grace and mercy.

So how do you grow in that? You keep doing what got you there in the first place. Quit looking around for stuff that will help you grow. Just look to Jesus. "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." - Romans 10:17 (ESV) How did Jesus stay connected? He was a man of the Word and Prayer. And if Jesus needed that - How much more do we?

Keep your eyes on JESUS!

You are kind, God! Please have pity on me. You are always merciful! Please wipe away my sins. Wash me clean from all of my sin and guilt. - Psalm 51:1-2 (CEV)

David prayed this prayer in Psalm 51 after his sin with Bathsheba. But I am reminded of two things we need to see in this whole thing. One of them is seen in the "header" for the chapter. (For the music leader. A psalm by David when the prophet Nathan came to him after David had been with Bathsheba.)

Did you notice that it said "when the prophet Nathan...."? Even Kings need to be called out if they have unrepentant sin. This must have been terrifying for the prophet. David could have easily had him killed. But it's important to see how Nathan handled this.

He did it only when God had directed him to do so. He did it with personal humility. He did it only as the messenger for God, not as a judge himself. He did it with the hope that David would repent.

We are similarly called to address the unrepentant sin in other BELIEVERS. But we are NEVER called to be the judge, jury and executioners. We are to humbly go to them with the hope that repentance will be the result. When we go with an attitude of "making them pay", we are playing God and are sinning ourselves.

The second thing I want you to notice about this passage (and actually you see it much more in the rest of the Psalm), was David's ownership of this sin. He totally owned his guilt. He did not blame Bathsheba. He did not blame his circumstances or culture. He did not blame it on being the runt in his family or having an overbearing mother or absentee dad.

So what do we need to do? We need to prayerfully and humbly call out unrepentant sin in the lives of brothers and sisters (with God's leading!!!). We also need to own our own sin. We need to take responsibility for our transgressions. We need to call out to God for both our own sins and the sins of others.

I realize how kind God has been to me, and so I tell each of you not to think you are better than you really are. Use good sense and measure yourself by the amount of faith that God has given you. A body is made up of many parts, and each of them has its own use. - Romans 12:3-4 (CEV)

Pride. We all struggle with it. Sometimes it is blatant with us looking for a trumpeter to go before us as we seek praise for ourselves. At other times it is seen by a "false humility". Pride was the reason for the fall of Satan. And I think it's the root of almost every sin we commit.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it's just crazy how we as believers come to Christ knowing we have absolutely nothing to offer, bankrupt spiritually and fall on His grace and mercy. But then we slip back into pride. We proudly tout our own abilities - something given by God, but we act like we did something to earn it. In pride we look down our noses at those with different gifts, like ours are somehow better or more important to the kingdom. In pride we prefer ourselves over others instead of preferring others first.

But like Paul said, we are all part of ONE BODY. It's when we really understand that concept that we can begin the process of dealing with pride. Also, understanding that even our best actions are "filthy rags" in comparison to God's holiness. But be warned, even when we start whittling away at pride, pride sneaks in and reminds you of what a great job you are doing even in that.
