We often hear that "Communication is the key" to healthy and successful relationships. If prayer is the method by which we communicate with God, then the consistency of that communication says something about the state of our relationship with God. Prayer affirms and reaffirms our relationship with God. Shaky and inconsistent prayer life probably indicates a shaky and inconsistent relationship. Strong and consistent prayer life probably indicates a strong and consistent relationship. What a blessing it is that God holds no grudges against us for allowing the communication to wane. We don't have to be fed a guilt trip about how long it's been since He has heard from us or how disappointing it is that we've made time to talk with everyone else but Him. God is always listening and waiting for us to make contact, and He is always happy to hear from us. Pray today.

Conversation with God: The Power of Prevailing Prayer
By Brian Sutton

DAY 3 OF 7

Prayer is Conversation with God

Prayer is conversation with one who is always there. Prayer allows us access through Jesus Christ into a conversation with God. God is always seeking a conversation with us. God always greatly desires to communicate with us.

My wife and I recently did some redecorating in our upstairs bathroom. We took down some wallpaper, spackled a few holes, and repainted the walls. She purchased some new decorations and pictures. Of course, she wanted me to hang these pictures on the walls, so I went into my garage, reached into my tool bag, pulled out my hammer, and grabbed some nails. I took my hammer and used it to drive in every one of those nails in the exact location where my wife wanted those pictures hung.

When I finished driving the nails, I hung the pictures and headed back into my garage. I opened my tool bag again, placed my hammer back inside. Finished! Right now, my hammer is put away. I know it will be there the next time I need it. That’s using my hammer as the tool for which it was intended.

We might as well admit it. We often use prayer in our lives and in the church as a tool from a tool bag. When we need God to do something, when we need something in ministry, when we desire to have something accomplished, we go to the spiritual tool bag because we know prayer is what we should use. We pick up prayer, we pray the prayer, and then we put prayer back in the bag until we need it again. But prayer is intended to be so much more than this!

So often we use prayer as a vehicle to get us to a desired destination. We need provision, so we pray. We need anointing, so we pray. We need healing, or deliverance, or cleansing, so we pray. But what if prayer is not the vehicle that brings us to our destination, but rather, what if it is the destination? Prayer is not simply a step of the journey, prayer is the journey. When we realize this, we begin to understand prayer as a continual conversation with God and our relationship with God deepens to new levels.

Scripture:

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

God has already proven His deep, unconditional, and endless love for us. Yet, it is not until we get to the place of truly believing and then receiving that love, that we experience the transformative power of it. When we truly receive it, we can't help but love God with our whole hearts. That totally surrendered love unlocks the power to live a life that glorifies God, just as He intended.

Day 7 of 7

Unstoppable

When you are in love, you are different. You will do anything, go anywhere. All you want is to be with the one you love. This is true, passionate love – being totally committed, not just dipping your toes in the water to see what the temperature is like. If you are not in love, then why serve, why minster, why turn up at church, why go to another meeting? Rolland and I were missionaries for 26 years before we discovered this truth!

Rolland was even born on the mission field. But we got really tired and burned out. To say we were missing the point is an understatement. But then God got hold of us and poured His sweet “Holy Spirit love” into us. He transformed us into people who were fully in love, fully committed – and with that love comes unstoppable energy.

When you are in love, you have power; you will do anything and go anywhere your loved one asks. You simply trust the one you love to be there for you. You can run headlong into dark places if you know light is waiting for you. You can jump out of a boat into a stormy sea; you can take extravagant risks; you can live right on the edge. If you fall off or fall over, you fall into grace.

When you start to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, you start to get full. Full of what? Full of God. Full of the understanding that no matter what He asks you to do, you can do it. No matter where He asks you to go, you can go. You can live on the edge, because even in the darkest places, light is waiting for you. His love, His light, in you and me.

True love and passion make us unstoppable.

As we come to the end of this devotional plan, understand that God is calling you into a place of deeper intimacy with Him. He longs to fill you to overflowing with His love and grace, that His fragrance might spill out of you to touch the world. Surrender to Him afresh now, and let His unstoppable love consume you. You are loved!

Scripture:

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Day 6 of 7

Letting Go

We have to let go of our preconceived ideas, our carefully worked out plans, our way of doing things, so God can live in us. We need new life, His life. If we are going to make room to carry His glory, we have to die first. We have to take our place at the cross and say, as Jesus said, “Not my will but yours, God. Your will. I will drink the cup You have called me to drink, whatever the cost.”

Paul prayed he would have sufficient courage (see Philippians 1:20). We all need that courage. Sufficient courage to look right into the storm you are facing and see heaven’s provision. Enough courage to drink the cup you are called to drink.

When a huge cyclone hit Mozambique and caused a famine, God asked me, “Do you trust Me, Heidi?” From screaming no, I learned to scream, “Yes, Lord! Yes, I believe.” In one week, we were given as many containers of food as in the previous 12 years combined. We fed 12,000 people a day, and then we fed more. The trucks rolled out and the people were fed. God did the impossible.

When we try to fix things in our strength, we become burned out and die of exhaustion. Why not drink your cup and leave your impossible burdens to Jesus? “Not my will, but Yours be done, Lord.”

It takes courage to let go– to let go of your way, to let go of being the answer. We are not the answer, my friend. God is.

If we live like this, it will mean fruitful labor. Without fruit, what would be the point of living anyway? But the seed has to be buried deep in the ground before the fruit has a chance to take hold. Before the harvest is ready, the fields look bare. All the life is hidden, ready to be revealed, ready to be released, in His time.

I pray that today you would know the freedom of simply being you and letting God be God. It is as you surrender your life, your circumstances, to Him, that His strength comes to replace your weakness.

Scripture:

First of all, then, I urge that petitions (specific requests), prayers, intercessions (prayers for others) and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all people, for kings and all who are in [positions of] high authority, so that we may live a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This [kind of praying] is good and acceptable and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who wishes all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge and recognition of the [divine] truth. For there is [only] one God, and [only] one Mediator between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom [a substitutionary sacrifice to atone] for all, the testimony given at the right and proper time.

Day 5 of 5

Attitude Adjustment

We have to be careful not to let our past experiences, people, stress, or fear determine our attitude. If we focus on our circumstances, it will eat us alive! If we focus on Jesus, He will renew who we are in Him.

Life is going to happen. When it does, if we have a negative attitude, we become defeated and angry. We blame others and begin to believe we are victims. If we have a positive attitude, we have joy and can grow, becoming stronger and more like Christ. Now, a positive attitude doesn’t mean we are happy when we lose our job, it just means that we rely on God instead of ourselves to move forward. We can take on an attitude of love instead of revenge. We can look to the future with faith that God is in control. We know that even if, “We are hard pressed on every side we are not crushed; if perplexed we are not in despair; if persecuted we are not abandoned; if struck down, we are not destroyed.”

If we want our attitude to be transformed, we have to allow God’s truth to saturate our minds. Right attitudes can only be formed when we spend time letting Jesus change the way we think. As our thinking is changed, so is our heart. Over time, our attitude will begin to reflect Jesus. Life will no longer happen to us. Our situations will no longer destroy us. Instead, we will be living with the attitude that God is in control, and has entrusted us with situation in front of us. We can do all things with Him at our side, and we can do it with a godly attitude.

How do you need to start spending time with Him? A good place to begin is by telling Him what type of attitude you want Him to grow inside of you. Let Him begin to renew your mind today. Your life will never be the same!

Scripture:

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Romans 12:2 NLT
https://bible.com/bible/116/rom.12.2.NLT

throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
