Doctor or Deity?
(America's Dangerous Dance with Idolatry)
There’s a fine line between admiration and adoration, and lately, that line is getting trampled. In moments of crisis, people naturally look for strength, certainty, and someone who seems to have the answers. But when a leader—any leader—is elevated beyond human limits, something dangerous begins to happen.
We stop evaluating.
We stop questioning.
We stop thinking.
We start worshipping.
The image attached to this post isn’t just art. It’s a mirror. It reflects a growing cultural impulse to turn political figures into saviors, healers, or divine agents. Whether meant sincerely or satirically, the symbolism is unmistakable: a leader cast as a miracle worker, surrounded by reverence, light, and heavenly approval.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth: Idolatry doesn’t begin with the idol. It begins with the people.
When we project supernatural power onto human beings, we surrender our own responsibility.
We trade critical thinking for comfort.
We exchange accountability for awe.
And in doing so, we risk losing the very freedoms we claim to defend. Leaders can inspire. They can guide. They can even heal divisions.
But they cannot—and should not—become deities.
The moment we place any human on a pedestal high enough to touch the clouds, we stop seeing them clearly. And once we stop seeing clearly, we stop choosing wisely.
So let’s step back. Let’s breathe. Let’s remember that strength doesn’t require sanctification, and leadership doesn’t require worship.
A nation is healthiest when its citizens think critically, question boldly, and refuse to hand their power to anyone—no matter how charismatic, confident, or comforting they may appear.
Doctor or deity? The answer should never be in doubt.
