O Lord our God,

We praise you that you alone are worthy of all worship and devotion.
You are a jealous God,
zealous for your own glory,
and worthy of the undivided love and allegiance of your people.

We confess before you that the sins forbidden in the first commandment are many and grievous.
We have at times denied you in our thoughts,
forgotten your goodness,
distrusted your providence,
and failed to fear, love, and honor you as we ought.

We acknowledge that idolatry is not only the worship of false gods,
but every affection, desire, or confidence that displaces you from the throne of our hearts.
We confess our pride, self-sufficiency, worldliness, covetousness, and unbelief.
Too often we have trusted in our own wisdom rather than yours,
sought comfort in earthly things rather than in your promises,
and feared the opinions of men more than your holy displeasure.

Forgive us, O Lord, for every form of practical atheism,
every neglect of prayer,
every coldness in worship,
every spiritual carelessness,
and every rival affection that has drawn our hearts away from you.

We thank you for Jesus Christ,
who perfectly honored you in all things.
He trusted you completely,
obeyed you perfectly,
and loved you with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength.
We praise you that his righteousness covers all our failures.

By your Holy Spirit, destroy the idols that remain within us.
Teach us to know you more fully,
trust you more completely,
fear you more reverently,
and love you more fervently.

Guard us against the subtle idols of our age:
the love of comfort,
the pursuit of wealth,
the worship of self,
the craving for approval,
and the fear of man.

Make us a people whose confidence is in God alone,
whose joy is in God alone,
and whose hope is in God alone.

And bring us at last into your heavenly presence,
where every idol shall be forever removed,
and where we shall worship and delight in you alone throughout eternity.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who has reconciled us to the living and true God. Amen.

O Lord our God,

We praise you that you alone are worthy of all worship, trust, love, and obedience.
You are the one true and living God,
the fountain of all being, wisdom, goodness, and glory.
To know you is life,
and to serve you is perfect freedom.

We thank you that in the first commandment you teach us
that no other gods are to be before you.
You demand not merely outward allegiance,
but the complete devotion of our hearts.
You call us to acknowledge you as God alone
and to live before your face in all things.

We confess that we have often lived as though other gods existed.
We have feared man more than you,
trusted riches more than your providence,
and sought satisfaction in created things rather than in your presence.
Though our lips may confess your name,
our hearts have often wandered after idols.
Forgive us, we pray.

Grant us grace to understand that you see and know all things.
Nothing is hidden from your sight.
You know every thought, affection, motive, and desire.
Help us therefore to live consciously before you,
remembering that every idol is an offense against your majesty.

Search our hearts and reveal whatever competes with you for first place in our lives.
Expose every false refuge, every sinful attachment,
and every rival affection.
Grant us repentance where we have loved other things more than you.

Teach us to treasure you above all earthly blessings.
May we fear your displeasure more than the loss of worldly comfort,
and desire your favor more than the praise of men.

Strengthen us to walk before you with sincerity and integrity.
Help us to remember that we live coram Deo, before the face of God,
whose eyes are upon all our ways.

And bring us at last into that heavenly kingdom
where no idol shall ever tempt us again,
and where our hearts shall be wholly devoted to you forever.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who has redeemed us that we might serve the living and true God. Amen.

O Lord our God,

We praise you that you alone are God,
and that the first and greatest commandment calls us
to know, acknowledge, worship, and glorify you as the only true God.
You are the Lord, and there is no other.
Beside you there is no Savior.

We thank you that you have revealed yourself to us
as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
and have brought us into covenant fellowship with yourself through Jesus Christ.
You are our Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, and King,
worthy of all honor, trust, love, and obedience.

We confess that we have broken this commandment in countless ways.
Though we may not bow before carved images,
our hearts have often been filled with idols.
We have trusted in ourselves,
feared man more than God,
loved created things more than our Creator,
and sought satisfaction apart from you.
Forgive us, we pray.

Turn our hearts from every false god.
Expose the idols that compete for our affections,
and grant us grace to forsake them.
Teach us to fear you above all others,
to trust you in every circumstance,
and to love you with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Give us a deeper knowledge of your character,
a greater delight in your presence,
and a stronger desire to glorify you in all that we do.

Help us to worship you sincerely,
to pray to you fervently,
to depend upon you completely,
and to submit to your will gladly.

Guard your church from every form of idolatry and unbelief.
Keep us faithful to the truth of your Word,
and make us a people wholly devoted to you.

And bring us at last into your heavenly presence,
where we shall worship you alone,
without distraction, sin, or divided affection,
forever and ever.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is the way, the truth, and the life. Amen.

Preparation for Public Worship

O Lord, as we gather with Your people today, grant that we may worship You in spirit and truth. Give us attentive ears, believing hearts, and obedient wills. May Christ be exalted in the preaching of the Word, the prayers of the saints, and the fellowship of the church. Prepare us especially to receive the Lord's Supper with faith, repentance, gratitude, and love. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord our God,

We praise you as the one true and living God,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
the God who brought your people out of the house of bo***ge,
and who has redeemed us from sin and death through Jesus Christ.

We thank you for the gracious preface to your holy law.
Before you command, you remind us who you are.
Before you require obedience, you reveal your covenant mercy.
You are not a distant ruler, but our God and Father through Christ,
who has redeemed us and made us your own people.

We confess that we have often forgotten your goodness.
We have viewed your commandments as burdensome,
rather than as the loving instructions of our Redeemer.
We have failed to obey you with gratitude, reverence, and love.
Forgive us, we pray.

Grant that we may always remember who you are
and what you have done for us.
Teach us to obey your commandments
not merely because of your authority,
but also because of your mercy and grace.

Fill our hearts with reverence for your majesty.
Deepen our gratitude for our redemption in Christ.
Cause us to delight in serving you,
as children who love their Father
and as redeemed sinners who love their Savior.

Keep us mindful that we belong to you.
You have purchased us with the blood of your Son.
Therefore help us to glorify you in body and soul,
which are yours.

May the remembrance of your covenant love
strengthen us in temptation,
encourage us in trials,
and move us to cheerful obedience.

And bring us at last into that eternal kingdom
where we shall perfectly know you as our God
and perfectly serve you as your redeemed people forever.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
our Redeemer and King. Amen.

O Lord our God,

We praise you that your law is perfect,
reaching not only our outward actions but also the deepest thoughts and intentions of our hearts.
You require that the whole man be conformed to your will,
and that every duty be performed in full obedience to your commandments.

We confess that we have often narrowed your law to outward behavior,
while neglecting the sins of the heart.
We have imagined ourselves obedient when our motives were impure,
our desires disordered,
and our affections cold toward you.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord.

We acknowledge that every commandment binds us completely,
requiring all that is commanded
and forbidding all that is contrary to it.
We confess that we have failed not only by doing what is forbidden,
but also by neglecting what is required.

We thank you for Jesus Christ,
who alone fulfilled your law perfectly in heart and life.
His thoughts were always pure,
his motives always holy,
and his obedience always complete.
We praise you that his righteousness is counted as ours through faith.

Search us, O God, and know our hearts.
Try us and know our thoughts.
Reveal hidden sins that we have overlooked,
and grant us true repentance for both secret and open transgressions.

By your Holy Spirit, renew us from within.
Purify our desires,
sanctify our imaginations,
govern our words,
and direct our actions.
Teach us to obey you sincerely,
not merely before the eyes of men,
but before your all-seeing presence.

Help us to love every duty you command
and to hate every sin you forbid.
Grant that our obedience may be wholehearted,
flowing from faith in Christ and love for you.

And hasten the day when our hearts shall be perfectly pure,
when every thought shall be captive to your will,
and when we shall serve you without sin forever.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who loved you perfectly with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. Amen.

O holy and righteous God,

We praise you for the perfection of your law.
You require of us not only outward conformity,
but perfect, personal, perpetual obedience.
You command us to love you with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind,
and to love our neighbor as ourselves,
inwardly and outwardly, without interruption or defect.

We confess that your law is holy, just, and good,
and that your requirements are altogether righteous.
The fault is not in your law, but in us.
We have fallen far short of what you require.
We have sinned not only in our actions,
but in our thoughts, desires, motives, and affections.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord.

We thank you for Jesus Christ,
who alone has rendered the perfect obedience that your law demands.
He loved you perfectly,
served you faithfully,
and fulfilled all righteousness on behalf of his people.
We praise you that his obedience is counted as ours through faith.

Deliver us from every attempt to justify ourselves.
Keep us from trusting in our works, our sincerity, or our religious duties.
Teach us to rest wholly in the righteousness of Christ alone.

Yet, having been accepted in him,
grant that we may increasingly delight in your commandments.
By your Holy Spirit, renew our hearts,
that we may sincerely desire to obey you in all things.

Help us to pursue holiness not merely in outward conduct,
but in the hidden thoughts and motives of the heart.
Create in us clean hearts, O God,
and renew right spirits within us.

When we see our failures, drive us to Christ.
When we see your holiness, deepen our reverence.
When we experience your grace, enlarge our gratitude.

And hasten the day when sin shall be no more,
when your law shall be perfectly fulfilled in us,
and when we shall love you with all our being forever.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
the perfectly obedient Savior of sinners. Amen.

06/04/2026

O Lord our God,

We praise you that the sum of your law is love.
You have taught us that all your commandments are comprehended in these two great duties:
to love you with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind,
and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

We thank you that your law is not arbitrary,
but reflects your own holy and loving character.
You are love, and you call your people to walk in love before you and toward one another.

We confess that we have failed in both of these great commandments.
We have not loved you with our whole being.
Our hearts have been divided,
our affections cold,
and our devotion inconsistent.
Neither have we loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We have been selfish, impatient, proud, and unkind.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord.

We thank you for Jesus Christ,
who perfectly loved you in every thought, word, and deed,
and who loved his neighbor even to the point of laying down his life for sinners.
Grant that we may be clothed in his righteousness
and transformed by his grace.

Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.
Kindle within us a greater love for you.
Teach us to delight in your presence,
to treasure your Word,
and to seek your glory in all things.

And teach us to love our neighbors sincerely.
Help us to bear with one another's weaknesses,
to forgive as we have been forgiven,
to seek the good of others before our own interests,
and to show the love of Christ in word and deed.

Make our homes, our churches, and our communities
places where the love of God is displayed.
Let our lives bear witness that we belong to Christ.

And bring us at last into your heavenly kingdom,
where love shall be perfected,
where sin shall be no more,
and where we shall love you with undivided hearts forever.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who loved us and gave himself for us. Amen.
