Abouna Joseph had a pastoral youth visit to the parish of St. Gabriel in Haworth, NJ on the weekend of August 29-30, 2026, in connection with the Feast of St. Gabriel of Qartmin, where the separation of the saint’s relic hand is remembered every year on August 31.

The weekend program began on Saturday with the Vigil (Shahro) of St. Gabriel where the choir chanted hymns connected to the patron saint, followed by a spiritual lecture delivered by Abouna Saliba Er in Syriac and English on the life, faithful witness and miraculous works of St. Gabriel. The evening concluded with Evening (Ramsho) prayers.

The highlight of the weekend was Sunday where Divine Liturgy was offered on behalf of the faithful, including the Service of the Saints, seeking the intercession of the patron saint, Mor Gabriel. After the Divine Liturgy the organizations of Mor Gabriel hosted our Syriac Orthodox community of New Jersey for their annual picnic filled with fellowship and joy. Youth from the three parishes in New Jersey all joined together in harmony.

May the prayers of Mor Gabriel of Qartmin be with our Youth always.

Abouna Joseph had a pastoral youth visit to the Church of the Virgin Mary in Paramus, NJ on Sunday, August 23, 2026, where he assisted Abouna Gabriel in offering the Divine Liturgy on behalf of the Virgin Mary Youth and faithful people.
The Holy Gospel reading was from Mark 12:38-44, and Abouna Joseph delivered a sermon on who the poor widow was and how she was prepared to put in all she had, two pennies, into the treasury. After the sermon Abouna Joseph gave the parish an update on youth activities and their spiritual progress. The Virgin Mary Youth actively participated throughout the Liturgy and offered the litany on behalf of the entire church.
After the Divine Liturgy, the Virgin Mary youth, Abouna Gabriel and Abouna Joseph spent time together in fellowship and discussed their upcoming events.

YOUTH BIBLE STUDY: DANIEL 12

On Tuesday, June 2, our Youth gathered for their weekly Youth Bible Study, where Abouna Joseph Shammas led the session on Daniel 12: The End Times. The gathering was held at the Mor Aphrem Center and on Zoom, where Youth joined from across our Archdiocese.

Nearing the end of the Book of Daniel, Abouna Joseph reminded the Youth of the Prophet Daniel’s long and faithful witness to God, despite his many years as a slave in a foreign land. Daniel’s visions and the prophecies increase in time, as Daniel’s faith, fasting, prayers and time with God increase. Towards the end of Daniel’s long life, God reveals elements of the End Times to Daniel in astonishing detail. We are reminded by Daniel’s testimony that God is always with those who are faithful, despite hardship, trials and struggles.

Our youth engaged in very thoughtful questions throughout the session on the topic of the End Times according to the Syriac Orthodox Tradition, especially in light of the broader contemporary discussion about the condition of the world around us and the many prophecies from the Book of Daniel.

The evening concluded with a prayer, seeking God’s grace for our faithful youth, and a call to bring His lost youth sheep back to His Holy Church.
