The original Greek word for “Fruit” in Galatians 5 is karpos, and one definition means “a result of something.” When the Fruit of the Spirit is displayed in our lives, it is a sign, or result, that we are being led by the Spirit of God. Just like the branches of a grapevine have to be connected to the vine in order to bear grapes, the Fruit of the Spirit is evidence of being connected to Christ.

Why was the Fruit of the Spirit even mentioned? Because of the five verses preceding it. They mention sinful acts including sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, hatred, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, and drunkenness. You see, we have this thing called the flesh, and it is all of our human desires. Our flesh wants things that prevent God’s Holy Spirit from leading us fully. In fact, Galatians 5:17 says, “the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.” Bottom line: you can be led by the flesh, or you can be led by the Spirit of God, but you can’t be led by both—they are in constant conflict.

Probably the most beautiful part of the passage in verse 23 is that we are told there is “no law against them.” In fact, it would be true to say that we can exhibit the Fruit without any limits or restrictions. We can never show too much love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Now, that’s a goal to strive for!

“For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
Against such there is no law.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬-‭23‬ ‭

The real fight in the spiritual world is for our hearts. God is after our hearts, and the devil knows it. He was given permission to roam the earth, along with his demons, and he is trying to steal our hearts away from God. One of the ways the enemy attacks us is with temptations to sin. We fight temptation with self-control.

The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert where He was tempted by the devil. He fasted 40 days and was very hungry. The devil first tempted Him with suggesting that He should just make bread out of the stones! But Jesus withstood the temptation, and quoted scripture at the devil, saying that we do not live by only bread.

The devil then took Jesus to the highest point of the temple, and suggested that He throw himself down because the angels would save him! Jesus rebuked the devil with scripture again, saying that we shouldn’t test God.

The devil tested Jesus a third time from a high mountain. Basically the devil said, worship me, and I will give you all these kingdoms and their splendor. Again, Jesus withstood the temptation by quoting scripture and saying that we should only worship the one true God. After the third temptation, the devil left Jesus, and angels came and attended to Him.

Resisting temptations can be very difficult, and requires self-control. We are all born with selfishness in our hearts. It is normal for us to defend ourselves, take more food for ourselves, or strive for personal fame. However, with self-control, and a knowledge of the scriptures, we can fight these temptations and win, just as Jesus did. He did not allow His personal desires to enter His mind. Instead, Jesus maintained complete self-control as He fought the devil with scriptures.

Unfortunately, the enemy can figure out exactly what we want, and tempt us with that. Jesus understands because He was fully human, and resisted strong temptations! He succeeded and did not sin!

“Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ” Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭4‬:‭10‬-‭11‬ ‭

“What’s God like?” That’s the fundamental question that we’ve been answering over the past several days as we’ve been taking a close look at the “fruit” or the evidences of the Holy Spirit as He produces them in a Christian’s life. Now it’s worth reminding that when we talk about this fruit, we’re not just talking about arbitrary things. These are the very qualities of the Holy Spirit, Himself! He produces love because He is loving, He produces joy because He is joyful, He produces peace because He is peaceful, and so on.

That’s an important truth to hold onto, because whenever we delve into a spiritual subject, we’re dealing with something we can’t see with our natural eyes. As a result, we can drift in our comprehension of it. And here’s how this can happen when it comes to the fruit of the Spirit: We can start to see the fruit as a sort of product or piece of produce rather than an extension of the very character of the Lord. “Yeah, I know God wants me to be patient so He walks into His heavenly warehouse, goes down the patience isle, grabs a box off the shelf, pulls out some patience, and then drops it in my spiritual shopping cart. Right?”

How many of us have thought like that? But that’s so not what Scripture reveals on this subject. God isn’t desiring anything for or in us that isn’t also in Him. He’s not an impersonal sales clerk dispensing spiritual inventory. Rather, He’s as intimately involved in making these qualities realities in our lives as one could ever imagine. The closest natural image we can grasp is how a tree imparts its life-giving and fruit-producing properties to the branches that are connected to it. That’s the natural picture of the spiritual reality. God is, through the agency of His Holy Spirit, imparting His life, the very characteristics of who He is, into us. The fruit is the very reflection of Him.

At the end of the day, everyone, even those who have a deep and abiding faith in God, desires to know what He’s like. More than a desire, it’s a basic need we all have. We know it’s a need because God went to the greatest lengths to provide for this need by revealing what He’s like through His Son, Jesus. Christ left His place in heaven and was born into this world so humanity could witness what God is really like. That is what we see in Christ’s earthly existence—the Almighty Creator walking amidst and declaring Himself to His creation. And what’s He like? Notice in today’s verse as He says, “I am gentle.”

God is gentle. He isn’t harsh, cruel, insensitive, or abrasive. It’s His Spirit who works in us to produce this very quality in all those who are connected to Him through faith. What’s God like? A life filled with the gentleness of God’s Spirit is part of the answer.
