Is Silence Over-rated? September 5, 2022
Just the opposite in my humble opinion.
Very recently I returned with one of my dearest friends, from a wilderness retreat in a beautiful area in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Located approximately 14 mi. from the town of Paradise, so close our dazzling Lake Superior near Whitefish Point. This part of Michigan is by far, one of my most favorite. The people, the places, the sights and the smells all fill me with a sense of wonder and adventure.
My destination: a Catholic retreat camp called Companions of Christ the Lamb. This would be my second summer retreating at the CCL camp. It is considered a wilderness retreat but can be adapted to a retreatant’s comfort level. Like for instance, having certain conveniences as well as, how much you want to be with the community and other retreatants that are either living there or staying for a visit. This year I chose to distance myself a bit more and stay in a cozy little cabin hermitage called a poustinia. My desire was to hear only silence so I could better listen to my Lord. At times it was so quiet I could hear my resting heart beat and a gentle ringing in my ears that reminded me of crickets chirping.
When we are surrounded by others all the time, listening to music, podcasts or looking at any type of screen, we can’t truly hear what Jesus is trying to say to us. These all have their place, but it's healthy to take a rest.
We might even say, “I never hear God speaking to me.” There's a reason. We are only “half-listening”. When my son Ben was small, he would be chattering to me, needing my attention and a response. I would want to hear what he was saying, but I might stop him and say, wait 3 minutes, right now I’m only half-listening. He learned it paid to wait. Other times he would say to me, “Mom, are you only half-listening?” When your five year old nails it, you have to stop and re-evaluate!
What are our phones, TVs and tablets doing to us? They are chattering, wanting our attention, and wanting responses from us. This reminder isn’t headline news. How can God compete with that? Well, He will, but look out when He goes to get your attention!
Once you become accustomed to the silence, you will not be able to go long without it. It rejuvenates our spirit for the long haul. Not just some temporary fix to get us through the day.
You might say, no, not for me. But why? Think on it. Knowing that God is greater than all we're afraid of is very freeing. Live Jesus! Trust in Him and what He has in store for you in Eternity. Peace be with you.
His,
Laura
