HOLY TRINITY: Ex 34:4b-6, 8-9; II Cor 13:11-13; Jn 3:16-18
The mystery of the most Holy Trinity is a basic doctrine of Faith in Christianity,
understandable not with our heads but with our hearts. It teaches us that there
are three distinct Persons in one God, sharing the same Divine Nature, co-equal
and co-eternal.
Importance of Holy Trinity in Christian life: 1) All prayers in the Church begin
in the Name of the Holy Trinity and end glorifying the Trinity. 2) All Sacraments
are administered (we are baptized, confirmed, anointed, our sins are forgiven,
our marriage is blessed, and our Bishops, priests and deacons are ordained) in
the name of the Holy Trinity. 3) We bless ourselves, and the priest blesses us, in
the Name of the Holy Trinity.
Biblical basis: the New Testament gives clear teachings on the Holy Trinity.
1) At the Annunciation, God the Father sends His angel to Mary, God the Holy
Spirit comes upon her, the Power of the Most High overshadows her, and God
the Son becomes Incarnate in her womb.
2) At the baptism of Jesus, when the Son receives baptism from John the
Baptist, the Father’s Voice is heard, and the Holy Spirit appears as a Dove and
descends upon Jesus.
3) At the Ascension, Jesus gives the missionary command to his disciples to
baptize those who believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit
Life messages:1) Let us respect ourselves and others because everyone is the
temple of the Holy Spirit where all Three Persons of the Holy Trinity abide.
2) Let us have the firm conviction that the Trinitarian God abides in us, that He
is the Source of our hope, courage and strength, and that He is our final
destination.
3) Let us practice the Trinitarian relationship of love and unity in the family
relationships of father, mother, and children because by Baptism we become
children of God and members of God’s Trinitarian family.

Pentecost [A] Acts 2:1-11; I Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13; Jn 20:19-23

Pentecost literally means 50th. It is a feast celebrated even now by Jews on the 50th day after the Passover feast and by Christians on the 50th day after the feast of the Resurrection of Jesus. The Jewish Pentecost was originally a post-harvest thanksgiving feast. Later, the Jews included in it the remembrance of God’s Covenants with Noah after the Deluge and with Moses at Mt. Sinai

The event: On the day of Pentecost:

1) The Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary as tongues of fire.

2) The frightened apostles were transformed into fiery preachers and evangelizers and were given the gift of tongues by a special anointing of the Holy Spirit.

3) The listeners experienced a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit through the apostles’ gift of tongues: they heard Peter speaking in their native languages.

4) The early Christians became powerful witnesses and brave martyrs for their Faith in Jesus.

Once a man asked his pastor whether it was okay to smoke while he prayed. His pastor said, “Absolutely not! The man went to another priest, but he changed his question to, “Would it be okay to pray while I smoke?” “Yes, of course” was the answer.

We need to cultivate the spirit of forgiveness. The feast of Pentecost offers us the chance to look at the role which forgiveness should play in our dealings with others. Thus, we are challenged to examine our sense of compassion, patience, tolerance, and magnanimity. Learning to forgive is a lifelong task, but the Holy Spirit is with us to make us agents of forgiveness. If we are prepared on this day of Pentecost to receive the Holy Spirit into our lives, we can have confidence that our lives will be marked by the

Spirit of forgiveness The Venerable Bishop Fulton J. Sheen once said about the Church, “Even though we are God’s chosen people, we often behave more like God’s frozen people–frozen in our prayer life, frozen in the way we relate with one another, frozen in the way we celebrate our Faith.” Today is a great day to ask the Holy Spirit to rekindle in us the spirit of new life and enthusiasm, the fire of God’s love. Let us repeat Saint John Henry Cardinal Newman’s favorite little prayer,

“Come Holy Spirit:”

“Come Holy Spirit

Make our ears to hear

Make our eyes to see

Make our mouths to speak

Make our hearts to seek

Make our hands to reach out

And touch the world with your love. AMEN.”

Ascension of the Lord [A]: Acts 1:1-11; Eph 1:17-23; Mt 28:16-20
Today’s readings describe the Ascension of the Lord Jesus into his Heavenly glory after promising to send the Holy Spirit to the Apostles as the source of Heavenly power and commanding them to bear witness to Him through their lives and preaching throughout the world. But the ascended Jesus is still with us because of His promise, “I am with you always; yes, to the end of time” (Mt 28-20). He is with us at all times and in all places, releasing a new energy upon the earth, the energy of the Holy Spirit.
The Ascension mission to preach the Gospel: After attending a convention led by Billy Graham a woman wrote to him. “Dear Sir, I feel that God is calling me to preach the Gospel. But the trouble is that I have twelve children. What shall I do?” The televangelist replied: “Dear Madam, I am delighted to hear that God has called you to preach the Gospel. I am even more delighted to hear that He has already provided you with a congregation in your own home.
Life messages:
1) We need to be proclaimers and evangelizers: To be
a Christian is to be a proclaimer and an evangelizer. There is a difference between preaching and proclaiming. We preach with words, but we proclaim with our lives. Let us ask the guidance of the Spirit of God to bear witness to Jesus by our transparent Christian lives.
2) We have a teaching mission: Jesus taught us lessons of Faith, Hope, Love, forgiveness, mercy, and salvation by his life and his preaching and gave us the same mission for the conversion of our brothers and sisters. Hence, let us learn about Jesus and his teachings through our daily study of the Bible and the teachings of the Church, experience Jesus in personal prayer, our reception of the Sacraments and our works of charity, and convey to others the Jesus whom we experience with the help of the Holy Spirit.
3) We need Jesus as our source of strength and encouragement in doing His will: We will be able to overcome doubts about our Faith, as well as baseless fears, anxieties, and worries, by meditating on Jesus’ Ascension and the lesson it teaches — that we, too, are called to share his Glory in Heaven.

EASTER VI [A]: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17, I Pt 3:15-18, Jn 14:15-21
Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit to his apostles Today’s readings explain who the Holy Spirit is, what His roles are, and how we can experience Him in our daily lives.
An attorney was on vacation in a small farming town. While walking through the streets, he noticed that a car was involved in an accident. As expected, a large crowd gathered. The attorney was eager to get to the injured, but he couldn’t get near the car. Being a rather clever person, he started shouting loudly, “Let me through! Let me through! I am the son of the victim.” The crowd made way for him. Lying in front of the car was a donkey!
Life message: 1) We need to welcome the Holy Spirit, allow Him to act in us, and seek His help every day for our steady growth in spiritual life:
a) To conquer temptations from our habitual sins and to avoid the near occasions of these and other sins.
b) To remove the blocks caused by our addictions, evil habits, and from the various forms of abuse which we suffered in our early life, preventing our spiritual growth.
c) To discern and recognize the presence of Jesus in all the people we meet during the day and to offer them humble, loving service.
d) To become agents of reconciliation and healing to others in our family and this community, by asking forgiveness from those we have offended, and graciously granting forgiveness to those who continue to hurt our feelings and ill-treat us.

EASTER V [A] : Acts 6:1-7, 1Pt 2:4-9, Jn 14:1-12
Today’s readings tell us how the early Church accepted the challenge of keeping Jesus’ memory alive by remaining a dynamic Christian community, bearing witness to Christ by their unity, fidelity in worship and spirit of loving, humble service. Today’s Gospel introduces Jesus as the Way to God, the Truth to be accepted, and the Life to be shared and lived.
“No thanks.” Evangelist Billy Graham tells of a time during the early years of his preaching ministry when he was due to lead a crusade meeting in a town in South Carolina, and he needed to mail a letter. He asked a little boy in the main street how he could get to the post office. The boy gave him directions. Billy said, “If you come to the Central Baptist Church tonight, I’ll tell you how to get to Heaven, God the Father’s house.” The boy replied, “No thanks. You don’t even know how to get to the post office, and you are going to teach me how to go to Heaven?!”
St. Augustine’s discovery of God: “Late have I loved You, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved You! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for You. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which You created. You were with me, but I was not with You. Created things kept me from You; yet if they had not been in You, they would have not been at all. You called, You shouted, and You broke through my deafness. You flashed, You shone, and You dispelled my blindness. You breathed Your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for You. I have tasted You; now, I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me, and I burned for Your peace We need to possess, and live out, Jesus the Life. We share the Divine life of God by making use of the means Jesus established in his Church:
a) by actively participating in the Eucharistic celebration and properly
receiving the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion;
b) by the worthy reception of the other Sacraments;
c) by the meditative, daily reading of the Word of God;
d) by following the guidance of the life-giving Spirit of God, living within us; and
e) by communicating with God, the Source of Life, in personal and family prayers.

EASTER IV: Acts 2:14, 36-41; 1Pt 2:20b-25; Jn 10:1-10
On this Good Shepherd Sunday and the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, the Church reminds us of our call to become good shepherds of God’s flock and good sheep of His parishes and invites us to pray for vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate, and the consecrated life. Moses, the shepherd-leader: The Jews have a lovely legend to explain why God chose Moses to be the leader of His people. “When Moses was feeding the sheep of his father-in-law in the wilderness, a young lamb ran away. Moses followed it until it reached a ravine, where it found a well to
drink from. When Moses got up to it, he said: `I did not know that you ran away because you were thirsty. Now you must be weary.’ He took the lamb on his shoulders and carried it back. Then God said: `Because you have shown pity in leading back one of a flock belonging to another man, you shall lead my flock Israel;”
Pastor’s vacation: It’s been said that every pastor ought to have six weeks of vacation each year, because if he is a really good shepherd, he deserves it; and if he is not a very good shepherd, his congregation deserves it.

Life Messages: 1) We need to be good shepherds and good leaders: Everyone who is entrusted with the care of others is a shepherd. Hence, pastors, parents, teachers, doctors, nurses, government officials, and caregivers, among others, are all shepherds. We become good shepherds by loving those entrusted to us, praying for them, spending our time, talents, and blessings for their welfare, and guarding them from physical and spiritual dangers. Parents must be especially careful in
carrying out their duties toward their children, giving them good example and sound religious instruction. Above all, parents should pray for their children and, by living according to sound Christian moral principles, show their children how to do the same.

EASTER III [A] (April 19) Acts 2:14, 22-33 1 Pt 1:17-21, Lk 24:13-35
Our Scripture lessons for today have one common, encouraging theme: No matter what happens in our lives, the risen Jesus is always with us. God is always near to those who seek Him and desire to live in His presence, doing His will.
“Go to Mass every Sunday… work in a soup kitchen!” Archbishop Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee said in an interview in the magazine The Critic: “If younger people are having an identity problem as Catholics, I tell them to do two things: Go to Mass every Sunday, and work in a soup kitchen. If one does those two things over a period of time, then something will happen to give one a truly Catholic identity. The altar and the marketplace-these two must be related to each other; when they are, one works better and prays better.”
The Emmaus incident described in today’s Gospel shows us a God who will not abandon us when we are hurt or disappointed. The message of today’s Scripture readings is that the followers of Jesus are to maintain contact with their Risen Lord through prayer, the Eucharist, and the Bible.
We need to find Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread. In the Gospel story for today, we learn that we find Christ is in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. When we approach the altar to receive the Sacrament, we see and receive Christ. In John 6:51, Jesus says, “Whoever eats My Body and drinks My Blood shall live with me eternally.” The Eucharist is true “soul food,” the Bread of life for eternity. It feeds us and fulfills our spiritual needs. It is a pity that, often, we don’t realize what is happening during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, the sacred banquet of all believers. In this meal, we are in communion, not only with Jesus, but also with our
family and friends who have preceded us in death. The Eucharist is not simply Bread and Wine for today – it is a banquet for all eternity.

EASTER II [A] Acts 2:42-47, I Peter 1:3-9, John 20:19-31
The readings for this Sunday show us our need for God’s Divine Mercy, offered to us through the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the forgiveness of our sins, and through each celebration of the Sacraments (all instituted to sanctify us), when we receive them in trusting Faith.
Traffic cop’s mercy: A priest was forced by a police officer to pull over for speeding. As the officer was about to write the ticket, the priest said to him,
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5:7). The police
officer handed the priest the ticket, and said, “Go, and sin no more” (Jn 8:11).

1) Like St. Thomas, let us use our skepticism to help us grow in Faith. It is our genuine doubts about the doctrines of our religion that encourage us to study these doctrines more closely and, thus, to grow in our Faith. This will naturally lead us to a personal encounter with Jesus through our prayer, study of the Word of God, and frequenting of the Sacraments. However, we must never forget the fact that our Faith is not our own doing but is a gift from God. Hence, we need to augment our Faith every day by prayer so that we may join St. Thomas in his proclamation: “My Lord and my God” (Jn 20:28).
2) Let us have the courage of our Christian convictions to share our Faith as St. Thomas did. We are not to keep the gift of Faith locked in our hearts, but to share it with our children, our families and our neighbors, always remembering the words of Pope St. John XXIII: “Every believer in this world must become a spark of Christ’s light.”
3)We need to allow Jesus to transform all our doubts into true belief. We must invite him into our lives and ask him to “increase our faith.” The desire itself is the first step to being open to receive the gift of faith. The next step is to make that “leap” of trust, giving up our habit of trying to control the way things happen and simply depending on Jesus alone. Faith is an adventure which unfolds before us for the rest of our life – but now a life in his name!
