When I first attended a Lutheran service, like many other visitors, I was impressed but confused. Here is an explanation of what is going on, with an emphasis on what visitors tend to find the most different from what they are used to.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Panama City, FL has been fighting the good fight of faith since the announcement of Hurricane Michael before it hit the shores of Florida. On October 11th, Hurricane Michael hit the Florida panhandle as a category 5 storm early Wednesday afternoon, setting a record as the strongest storm to strike Florida in nearly a century. Just the day before, Good Shepherd, opened its doors to the church building to provide shelter for those who could not evacuate town before Hurricane Michael struck. As a result over 85 people were kept safe in the ark of Christ’s church, even as it seemed the world was falling apart around them. As the eye-wall of the hurricane reached Good Shepherd, they watched in dismay as buildings surrounding the church came apart. Even their own Family Life Center, appeared to be loosing its roof and siding. From their location in the basement of the church they watched awnings, debris and trees literally fly apart and past their location. Much of their surrounding church campus took heavy damage as a result of hurricane, but the church building itself withstood the storm like a house built on the rock. Following the aftermath of the storm, those who were kept safe began reaching out in the surrounding neighborhoods to those in need. Despite the lack of electricity, Good Shepherd began providing food and shelter to those who were now homeless and hungry.
Since the advent of Hurricane Michael, Good Shepherd has continued daily serving those around them. Even though a month has past, they have consistently provided 500 hot meals a day to those who are hungry. They have handed out over 500 buckets filled with cleaning supplies, as well as distributed necessary basic hygiene items such as toilet paper, soap, etc… to everyone who is in need. They have faithfully held Divine Service every Sunday since the hurricane providing hope for the hurting, the lost, the destitute and the faithful. Our Lord continues to provide for His people through His saints at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Panama City even in the wake of this devastating storm.

To all those who know and love GSLC, please be reassured the church building itself is not destroyed. In fact, of all the structures belonging to the church, the church held up the best. But, as a whole the church property sustained heavy damage. In the event of Hurricane Michael, Good Shepherd provided a shelter for local families who could not evacuate (for over 85 people). In the advent of the hurricane, these people were kept safe by the grace of God. The church’s sub-story served as a shelter during the hurricane and kept many families safe from harm, but the church has broken windows and water damage throughout portions. The Family Life Center (fellowship hall), the Early Learning Center (pre-school), and the church grounds took the greatest damage. The Family Life Center lost it’s roof and the ceiling caved. There is water through out the building. The exterior walls are standing, but some of the interior walls have come down. The trees on the grounds are down and make areas impassible. But despite these odds, no running water, no electricity, this church is still providing assistance to the surrounding community. The day after the hurricane, they were giving away hotdogs, chips and bottled water to anyone who needed food. Pastor and several family members and parishioners began rescue efforts, cutting through huge amounts of impassible debris. On Sunday, October 14, 2018, they still held Divine Service for anyone who could attend and sang a ca****la. God has continued to use this church, despite devastating odds and broken hearts to reach out and help those with whatever they have left. A Facebook fundraiser, originally set for $10,000, was attached to the Pastor name. As of October 15th it was closed and reopened so that Good Shepherd Lutheran Church was actually the named beneficiary. The money already raised by the first fundraiser is being sent directly to the church. If you look for the new fundraiser on Facebook, it will read something like “For the Congregation at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church” set at $9,000. The peace of the Lord be with you.
