A CCS Alumni Legacy…
Kirsten Messer
🔹Years attended: 2016-2018 (Junior and Senior year)
🔹Current occupation: Fireman in the United States Coast Guard
🔹Favorite CCS memory: Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve played sports my entire life, so when Mr. Sabo came to Covenant and decided to start back up the volleyball team, I was ecstatic! I played volleyball my entire life, so I was happy to play during my final year of high school. It not only gave me the opportunity to get to know my classmates as a team, but being a team of girls that had never played volleyball before, it allowed me to coach and mentor the younger classmen. This actually led to coaching them several seasons after graduation!
🔹Favorite CCS teacher(s): Though he didn’t teach for long, in my junior year, one of my favorite teachers was Mr. Camperman. He gave my classmates and I the opportunity to dive into our marine biology studies by helping our local ecosystem. We created a system for catching an invasive species, which threw me into the world of biological and natural sciences. Not only did we go on several unforgettable adventures like camping, diving, and traveling to present our design to several government officials in Tallahassee, but as a group, we published an article about our research in Guy Harvey Magazine. I don’t know if Mr. Camperman knows how much I appreciated his antics, but being sixteen and having those accomplishments under my belt gave me so much confidence about my own abilities and how with true dedication and hard work, I could do big things.
🔹How does your Christian faith impact your life?
As a young person, faith can either be really easy or really hard. Some people are blessed with unwavering childlike faith, but unfortunately, I wasn’t always one of those people. In 2020, my little sister was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. At the time, she was only eleven years old. Understandably, my faith was a little shaken, but my little sister? She was my rock. She never once had doubts. Every chemo day started out with smiles, prayer, and Chick-fil-a, and no matter how badly the chemotherapy hit her, she would always crack jokes. With her incredibly stubborn attitude, bravery, and a community of prayers, she beat cancer. Faith is something that used to come to me in waves, but now occurs as a strong and steady stream. I owe that to my miracle of a sister and an incredibly awesome God that can do anything.
🔹What advice would you give to our current CCS students?
You do not need to figure out your life before you graduate high school. I’m 23 years old raising my first kid, active duty military, and I still haven’t figured out what kind of career I want. Since high school, I’ve tried photography, childcare, small business entrepreneurship, religious activities, and even took some time to be a housewife while living in Germany! Now I’m a fireman in the Coast Guard which matches none of my previous interests. My advice would be to just try new things and live life! You can’t perfectly plan out your whole life no matter how hard you try. There is no right or wrong answer, only left or right. Living life according to God’s word doesn’t mean you’ll always have the answers, so trust Him and do your best every day!
