Should Christians Keep the Sabbath?
Yes, those who see the Sabbath as part of Jewish traditions or ceremonial law that were a shadow of Christ's work raise questions. Just a smattering of verses used are Matt 12:8, Luke 6:5, Hebrews 4:1-11, Romans 4:14, and Col 2:16 (perhaps not a normal weekly Sabbath).
Many other verses are raised to argue for latitude in the keeping of the Sabbath. One can, of course, also raise many verses to argue for the continuation of the keeping of the Sabbath. Part of the question hinges on whether the sabbath given before the law should be considered part of the ceremonial law or the moral law given at creation. The WMC is clear on its position on the sabbath. Looking at the sabbath as it is presented from Genesis to Revelation instead of seeing it only as an NT issue, it appears the WMC is correct. The Sabbath was initiated at the beginning of this universe and is to remain until the end of this universe. In the new creation that exists now, we have an already perpetual sabbath in Christ but a not yet sin-free sabbath rest as we will have in glory. As was decreed from the beginning, our state in glory will be far better than our state in Eden. Eden, the promised land, and our rest now in Christ point to our ultimate sabbath of rest in glory, which I believe will be an exhilarating and active time.
