Divine Service Sunday 10:30 a.m.

We do not a full time organist, she retired over a year ago. So music for the Divine Service comes from Church Music Solutions with their Substitute Organ Service.

These four wonderful ladies are those who have volunteered to run the I-pad and play the music for the Liturgy - which is played through our organ.

They do such a good job. They are on their toes and so attentive with what is going on in the Service. It is not easy to keep up with the timing and what comes next in the Liturgy. It is harder than one might imagine. These ladies do it well and I am grateful for their service.

Getting to do the full Divine Service with music for the Liturgy is a great blessing for our congregation and Church Music Solutions and these four ladies make it happen at Zion.

My oldest son is our church's janitor these days. Yesterday it was window washing day. I help him spray the water/soap and he wipes it clear. They were pretty dirty after the two rains we have had.

Devotions: Most days this is the view of where I do my devotions. I pray Morning Prayer from our hymnal (Lutheran Service Book) or Responsive Prayer 1 or 2 or Matins. Vespers if it is in the afternoon.

For years the Treasury of Daily Prayer has been what I read. It has the daily lectionary printed out, along with a "Writing" from Luther, the Confessions, or a Church Father. I supplement the TDP with Rev. Scott Murray's "A Year With the Church Fathers." Great stuff.

Year after year this is what I am reading and praying. It doesn't get old to me, it deepens my faith. God's Word is living and active, it is full of life and the Spirit, and it I need that each day. Pastor's deal with lots of troubling issues in their vocations, and we also need to care for our souls as well. Devotions are so vital to our spiritual lives. For those who share in this discipline and are steady with your devotions - well done. For those of you who are not - it is NEVER to late to begin.

I am grateful to Concordia Publishing House for the outstanding resources they produce to edify and keep steadfast with our devotional life.

Tomorrow I am going to preach on the OT reading from Jeremiah 15. Jeremiah has been given the very difficult task of proclaiming the fall and destruction of Jerusalem. And his hearers hated his message and hated him! No repentance for them.

Jeremiah speaks very frankly to the Lord and shares his hurts and complaints. He really thought that the Lord had abandoned him.

So for all those who are suffering for being faithful in your vocations - this text is for you. The Lord answers Jeremiah and we will hear about it tomorrow on Pentecost 14.

In Sunday morning Bible class we are studying the short book of Haggai. He preached in 520 BC to the Jewish exiles who had returned to Jerusalem from their Babylonian captivity and were charged with rebuilding the temple that had been destroyed.

I found this picture on an LCMS Fellowship page just the other day. On the left there is Haggai, the prophet. This picture deals with chapter 1:6, "You have sown much, and harvested little; you eat, but you never had enough; you drink, but you never have your fill; you cloth yourself, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes." (RSV)

God's people were letting His house lay in ruins, while they all were concerned about their houses, which were beautiful and paneled. Their priorities were skewed and Haggai was calling them to repentance.

Note the dry conditions, the sowing, but not having much and the bag with holes that the wages are being lost. They were neglecting God's house and His Word and He was trying to get their attention in these trials.

On the other side is Christ. He is surrounded by wonderful fruit trees, lush land and crops, water, and a city. He is our Savior and He wins for us forgiveness and peace with God. Only in Him will find paradise restored.

The people did repent and they did start construction on the house of the Lord. And Haggai reminds them that through the kingly line the Messiah will come forth.

Today, Aug. 24 is the feast day of St. Bartholomew, Apostle. He is also known as Nathanael in the Gospel of John where he was one of Jesus' very first disciples.

Some Early Church Fathers wrote about Bartholomew bringing the Gospel to Armenia where he was martyred by being flayed alive.

The Collect for this feast day: "Almighty God, Your Son Jesus Christ chose Bartholomew to be an apostle to preach the blessed Gospel. Grant that Your Church may love what he believed and preach what he taught; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen."

Our Lutheran Confessions really help us in confessing the true Faith from the Holy Scriptures.

This is a picture of the sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran Church in Shamrock. I serve that congregation as a vacancy pastor.

I go over there twice a month, usually the first and third Sundays, but it can vary. We do a full Divine Service at 2 p.m. It is a really nice church, but attendance is anywhere from 5 to 11. I wish it were full. It is amazing but they still have an organist and thus we get to do the liturgy of DS 3.

They have had some major finance issues, but I wrote a letter to our circuit pastors and they spread the word and we have been very blessed by the gifts given by those individuals. God be praised.

It is the Lord's Church and He provides. He may turn things around there, but until then I will serve them as best I can.

Today (Aug. 15) is a feast day. It is St. Mary, Mother of Our Lord. She is mentioned repeatedly in the Gospels and is present at most of the important events in her Son's life.

What I think is impressive with Mary is when the Angel Gabriel came to her and spoke to her that she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God, she simply replies: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to Your Word."
