On Sunday we celebrated our beloved Ann Gaston who is retiring as our Deacon, ending one chapter of her ministry and stepping into something new. Thank you to our guest, Archdeacon Michael Choquette, for sharing a lovely letter and tribute from Bishop Paula Clark. And, there was cake!

A Retirement Blessing

You started on this journey so many years ago, and now it’s time to leave behind dear friends you’ve come to know.

You sought Divine direction and a heart to do His will. Your work became your passion, as you used your gifts and skills.

You set the highest standards for yourself and others too, showing honor, pride and dignity - they saw the best in you!

A “rags to riches” story need not be your bottom line. The priceless things we gain in life often come from the Divine.

So, don’t waste one more minute wishing for things that might have been. Rather, watch the seeds you’ve planted grow, and feel His peace within.

I pray God keeps you safe and well, wherever you may turn, surrounded by your loved ones, living out the dreams you’ve earned.

And in the quiet of your heart, may you hear God softly say…. “My good and faithful servant, I’m so proud of you this day!”

This past Sunday our sermon focused on how creation groans with the pain of climate change. This was our offertory anthem, which focused on how we experience the groaning of creation in other ways as well. Creation groans because of our prejudice, our violence, our hate. Here are the words to the anthem:

In labor all creation groans till fear and hatred cease,
Till human hearts come to believe: In Christ alone is peace.
In labor all creation groans till war and violence cease,
Till sword and beaten into plows and Christ will be our peace.
In labor all creation groans till prejudice shall cease,
Till every race and tribe and tongue in Christ will live in peace.
In labor all creation groans till r**e and murder cease,
Till women walk by night unharmed and Christ is this world’s peace.
In labor all creation groans till false divisions cease,
Till enemies are reconciled in Christ who is our peace. (Words by Sister Delores Huffner)

Yesterday, Jason Elliott preached a prophetic and sobering message about climate change and how our own action and inaction as human beings has sown both good and evil in the world, life and destruction, wheat and tares. Now, we face a real reckoning and must reap what we have sown.

While it is typically nice for sermons to highlight the good news of the gospel, there is a time and place for this sort of prophetic and sobering word. Sometimes, we cannot receive the good news until we have taken the time to sit with and reckon with the bad news. There is redemption. There is the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ, but right now, our current climate crisis feels insurmountable. We are experiencing real death - spiritual, cultural, and literal - as a result of our action and inaction as human beings, and we may need to spend some time acknowledging that reality.

On the other hand, Jesus teaches us, "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit" (John 12:24, NRSV). Perhaps, in this death that we have brought about, we will somehow find new life. However, we cannot jump to that immediately. We must reckon with the death first. We must stare the bad news in the face before we can truly receive the good news. There is a season for all things, and now is a time to repent for the ways that we have squandered creation and to do what we can to set things to right, recognizing that our failure to steward creation has had and will continue to have dire consequences. May we be better caretakers of "this fragile earth, our island home" (1979 Book of Common Prayer, p. 370).
