SAINTS PASICRATES AND VALENTINE

The Martyrs Pasicrates and Valentine were soldiers from the city of Dorostolum in Moesia, serving under Governor Ausolanus. Pasicrates was twenty-two years old and Valentine was thirty.

When persecution broke out against Christians, they boldly confessed their faith in Christ. During his trial, Pasicrates refused to offer sacrifice to idols and even spat upon the statue of Apollo.

His brother wept and begged him to at least pretend to make an offering, but Pasicrates placed his hand into the sacrificial fire, saying: “The body is mortal and burns, but the soul is immortal and scorns all visible torment.” Valentine likewise declared himself ready to suffer for Christ.

As they were led to ex*****on, Pasicrates’ mother followed and encouraged her son not to fear death for Christ’s sake. Both martyrs were beheaded by the sword in the year 288. Their memory is honoured on May 7 (April 24).
