“Some men tell me, "I don't agree with my wife; we are complete opposites! How does God allow for such strange matches? Couldn't He provide so that couples would be compatible and live spiritually?" But I tell them, "Don't you understand that in this very difference of character lies hidden the harmony of God? It is the different characters which create harmony. God forbid that you should be the same in character! Think of what would happen if, for example, both of you had a short fuse; you would tear the house down!"”

“Oftentimes, couples tell me of their insecurities regarding the topic of childbearing, and ask for my opinion. Some only want one or two children, while others want to have many. However, it would be to their advantage to leave this matter of childbearing up to God—to entrust their life to Divine providence and not set up their own plan. They must have faith that God, Who cares for the birds in the air, will care much more for their children.” ~St. Paisios the Athonite

WEEKLY REFLECTION

“For a marriage to be happy, it must not be built on the principle of trying-it-out. Crowns are placed upon the heads of those being married in the Church, and these crowns symbolize martyrdom. Martyrdom, because someone decides to live for the other, transcending his egotism, and abandoning a life lived only for himself. And not just for a day, or for two years, but for your whole life. This is a real martyrdom and asceticism, when a person rises to the full measure of his human dignity.”

[Husbands should say to their wives:] I have taken you in my arms, and I love you, and I prefer you to my life itself. For the present life is nothing, and my most ardent dream is to spend it with you in such a way that we may be assured of not being separated in the life reserved for us... I place your love above all things, and nothing would be more bitter or painful to me than to be of a different mind than you.
