Our Gracious Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the freedom and the blessings we enjoy in this country. On this Memorial Day weekend, as we reflect on our many blessings and the high cost of those blessings for so many, we pause to remember the men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield. From Lexington and Concord to the Battle of New Orleans. From the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville to the battle of San Juan Hill. From the Battle of Belleau Wood to the beaches of Normandy. From the sands of Iwo Jima to the battle of Inchon and the Chosin Reservoir. From the battles of Khe Sanh and Hamburger Hill to the battle of Baghdad. From the battle of Ramadi to Fallujah and the Korengal Valley.
In mindful gratitude, we thank you for the more than 1.1 million American servicemen and women who have given their lives in service to our country since its founding.
We pray today for the families and friends of the fallen. May they be comforted in their sadness. Reassure them that the sacrifice their loved ones made contributed to a worthy cause for the sake of America’s survival and freedom.
Father, as we continue in this time of remembrance, let us always keep in mind that Memorial Day is set apart not merely for celebration, but primarily as a solemn remembrance in honor of the great sacrifice of so many.
And as we remember the fallen, we also think of those whose lives are on the line today. Men and women are deployed around the world in places of conflict and violence. We ask that you protect them, encourage them, and, more importantly, bring them to faith in Christ. Father, keep Your hand upon them. Bring them safely home to their families, we pray.
Thank you for the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. We ask this in Jesus' name and for His glory. Amen.
