Happy feast of St. Joseph the Worker! 🛠️ Joseph was a man ahead of his time: he stood by a woman who thought independently and made her own decisions (his wife, Mary). And he embraced his role as a father to a child who was not his own (Jesus). He stands as a powerful model of respect for women, support and integrity. A truly good guy!
St. Joseph is frequently highlighted in feminist theology as a model of non-patriarchal masculinity because his role within the Holy Family challenges traditional power structures. By examining his actions through both a Christian and feminist lens, we can see a radical departure from the hierarchical norms of his time.
Subverting Patriarchal Control
Joseph’s relationship with Mary is often cited as a profound example of partnership rather than domination. In a historical context where women were frequently treated as property, Joseph respected Mary’s autonomy and the divine agency she exercised in her 'fiat (her 'yes' to God).
His choice to stand by her, despite the social stigma of her pregnancy, demonstrates a man who prioritized her safety and the integrity of her decision-making over his own social standing or traditional male authority.
Redefining Fatherhood and Care
Joseph’s acceptance of Jesus, a child born into a situation that defied legal and social expectations, reimagines fatherhood as a vocation of service rather than biological possession. Feminist scholars often point to his role as a 'nurturer' in a domestic setting as a dismantling of the 'public/private' divide, where men were expected to lead only in the public sphere. By engaging deeply in the protective care of his family, Joseph validates caregiving as a core component of holiness, shifting the focus from 'patriarchal ownership' to 'supportive guardianship.'
A Model of Collaborative Support
In contemporary advocacy, Joseph is often presented as an ally who uses his social status and strength to provide space for women’s voices and initiatives. His legacy is one of:
- Consent and Respect: He upholds the woman’s central role in the narrative of salvation without attempting to usurp or silence her.
- Shared Responsibility: He accepts a role that is inherently supportive, demonstrating that masculinity is not diminished by playing a secondary or facilitating role in the realization of a woman's mission.
- Radical Inclusion: By embracing a non-traditional family structure, he signals that true strength is found in flexibility, empathy, and the courage to break with rigid, exclusionary traditions.
Joseph is a patron of the universal Church.
We pray:
St. Joseph, humble guardian of the Holy Family, you who recognized the divine call in Mary and shielded her mission with your unwavering support, we turn to you today.
As a man who stepped aside to honour the agency of a woman chosen by God, intercede for our Church now. You saw in Mary the strength to carry the Word. Help us to see the same strength in the women who hear the Holy Spirit calling them to the altar. Grant us the courage to dismantle the barriers that prevent their service and inspire a spirit of true partnership within the Body of Christ.
Just as you offered your strength to foster the life and work of the Mother of God, grant our Church leaders the grace to recognize, invite, and ordain those women who are ready to shepherd your people. May we all learn from your quiet integrity, trusting that a Church which honours the ministry of all its members is a Church that fully lives the Gospel.
St. Joseph, model of labourers and protector of the vulnerable, pray for our movement, that we may be guided by justice, humility, and the freedom of the Spirit. Amen.
