Today’s Gospel: Matthew 16:21-28

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Clothing Drive
Social Ministry would like to thank everyone who volunteered to make this year's clothing giveaway a success. Every year it gets better, and word gets around with people helping to spread the word by placing posters throughout the surrounding areas. This was our best year yet with a total of 242 participants; there were 149 women, 54 men, 39 children, and 2 babies. We are especially grateful to the team that sorted and folded clothes, worked and spent long days on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Additionally, Cory Bender, Laurie and Tim Miller, and Debbie Ricker returned on Monday to deliver the remaining excess to those in need and to Dress for Success.
Thank you also to the behind-the-scenes people, as well-Elaine Bender and Debbie Ricker for coordinating all communications; Bonnie Housel and her team for purchasing and preparing lunches; the Palmyra football team for unloading the trailer provided by Dexter Daubert; plus the Property Committee for setting up tables and placing signs throughout the building. Also, a shout out to Ron Conard and Cory Bender for ensuring we were all safe during this important outreach project.
We apologize that we cannot list all the names of those involved, but please know that each and every one of you are deeply appreciated! Thank you for making helping us bring smiles to so many faces this year!

Teddy Bear Ministry at Palm
The Canaanite woman in today's gospel (Matthew 15:10-28) is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter.
As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those in the margins of society? In our gathering around word and meal we receiv strength to be signs of comfort, healing, and justice for those in need.
The Teddy Bears are a tangible outreach to those who visit our church and may be in need of consolation. They wear this message:

“This bear has sat among the congregation of Palm Lutheran Church during worship services.
It has heard God's Word of grace and mercy and prayers for healing and comfort.
It has been loved and soaked in God's love.
Now it comes to you to share these blessings.”

The Teddy bears may be taken for
someone in need of a sign of God's love and comfort.

Sunday morning August 9, 2026

Elijah finds the presence of God not in earthquake, wind, or fire, but in the sound of sheer silence. When the disciples face a great storm on the sea, they cry out with fear.
Jesus says: "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." Amid the storms of life, we gather to seek the calm presence of Christ that soothes our fears. In comforting words of scripture and in the refreshing bread and cup of the eucharist, God grants us peace and sends us forth to be a sign of God's presence to others.
