Live your truth is the mantra of our culture, but what if the most fulfilling life is found in doing the exact opposite?

Following Jesus is a call to surrender our own agendas for a path that is infinitely greater than anything we could ever build on our own.

This is the essence of true discipleship: denial of self, dedication to His purpose, and trusting His direction.

Christian discipleship today isn't simply about believing certain truths. It's about following a person. It's about following Jesus. It means following learning from Jesus, trusting in Jesus, and ordering our lives around Jesus, all so that we can become more like Jesus. It involves leaving behind some things that maybe we once held onto, and it also means being led into something far better. It is, in every sense, an invitation to give all of ourselves to the one who gave everything for us.

Dive into the first message of the Discipled series as we unpack the three marks of a true disciple: denial, dedication, and direction: https://youtu.be/xZL4hEsIjDo

Drawing from Luke 9:23, this conversation challenges the idea of casual belief. Following Christ requires three essential marks: denial, dedication, and direction. It’s a call to move beyond part-time interest and into a life of daily, intentional devotion. While the path of following Jesus certainly comes with a cost, it ultimately unlocks a life far greater than anything built on personal ambition alone.

We may not make vows as extreme as Jephthah's, but we know what it is to say, God, if you will do this, I will fill in the blank. And almost everybody here has said that at some point in their life. God, if you do this for me, if you get me through this, if you help me with this, I will whatever it is. We try to leverage obedience. We try to trade devotion. We treat God less like a father to be trusted and more like a deal to be struck.

Your past may shape you, but it does not have to define you. Because while people may reject you, God doesn't. Long before Jephthah was cast out by his family, he was known by his creator. And God had a plan for his life. And the same is true for each one of us. You are not an accident. You are not an afterthought. You're not overlooked by heaven. The God who sees the outcast, who hears the cries of the forgotten, and who draws near to the brokenhearted, did not abandon Jephthah, even in the land of Tob. And he's not going to abandon you either.

These judges are not flawless heroes like we were often taught in Sunday school. They're not shining examples of spiritual strength. They are a deeply flawed and motley crew. A courageous woman leading in a man's world, a fearful farmer hiding in a wine press, a rejected outcast with a tragic story, a strong man enslaved to his own appetites and desires, and of course many more on top of that. This isn't a lineup of polished saints. It's a gallery of cracked vessels. And yet God still uses them.

Ever feel like your faith is hanging by a thread?

The story of Gideon is a powerful reminder that transformation doesn't happen because we are fearless; it happens because we serve a God who meets us in our weakness. Even when doubt creeps in, grace remains the constant. It’s comforting to know that hesitation or fear doesn't disqualify anyone from being used for something greater.

Sometimes, the most significant step forward comes simply from being reminded that divine strength is ready to meet us exactly where we are, not where we think we should be.

Ever wonder why you feel unqualified for what you’ve been called to do? The truth is, Gideon’s story shows that God isn't looking for the strongest or smartest person in the room—He’s looking for the one willing to trust Him.

From a frightened man hiding in a wine press to a leader who changed history, this powerful reminder shifts the focus from our own limited strength to the limitless power of obedience. When the weight of a task feels too big, remember that the One who gives the call is the same One who provides the power to see it through.

Reframing doubt into faith starts with a simple step of obedience, even when the circumstances seem impossible.
