TOO LAZY TO GO TO THE ALTAR
(long but worth the read)
Tonight, during my Bible reading, God revealed an interesting (and convicting) thing to me.
After Israel had conquered the land of Canaan, the Israelites who had already received their land inheritance on the other side of the Jordan were thanked for their service and told that they could return back to their homes. They were told to not forget their God who had done amazing things right before their eyes. They agreed and went home.
When they got back to their land, they built an altar. This infuriated the Israelites in Canaan because the Tent of Meeting/Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant was on THEIR side of the Jordan and it had already been established that NO sacrifices were to be made on any other altar than that one which was before God! However, when they were questioned, the Israelites calmed them and explained that the altar wasn't for sacrifice; it was to inform/remind future generations that the people on both sides of the Jordan were actually related and served the same God.
Now, although that's interesting, that wasn't God's lesson to me π...
Anyway, no other altars were supposed to be built on which sacrifices were to be made to God. There was ONE altar and it was where the Ark of the Covenant was housed: first, in the Tent of Meeting; then, in the tabernacle built by Solomon.
As the descendents of Abraham increased (a promise made to him by God), they spread further throughout the land. The location of the altar remained the same, but the people got further and further from it. As the distance increased, more of them began to begrudge making the long journey back to the altar to make their sacrifices. So, they began to build altars that were closer so that they didn't have to travel so far. Surely the God who had delivered them from slavery and hardship was with them EVERYWHERE (fact) and would accept their sacrifice wherever it was offered, right? WRONG!!!
The problem was that when they stopped going TO God, they began to worship OTHER gods and THEN (the horror π±), they sacrificed to the other gods on their man made altars π’.
Fast forward to the Crucifixion. When Christ died for our sins, the veil (the separation that kept us from approaching God) was torn. We were given access to God. No more brick & mortar. Now, the altar was built in our hearts!
Hallelujah! Christ is living IN us and the Holy Spirit is making intercession for us! Our heart is the altar with which we can approach God and make our sacrifice. It's right inside of us! It couldn't be any closer! That makes it so easy, right? π€ WRONG!!!
Many of us have still become TOO lazy to travel to the altar. We don't worship and praise like we should; we don't read our Word like we should; we don't pray like we should; we don't sacrifice LIKE WE SHOULD (Rom 12:1).
Although we are never to forsake our assembling (Heb 10:25), it is of little value if we're not going to the altar. Not the altar in our CHURCH, but the altar in our HEARTS. When we cease to go to God at the altar, other things start to become our gods. When we cease to go to God at the altar, we forget that HE is our Provider and that He is ENOUGH! When we cease to go to God at the altar, we get into the dangerous place of worshiping the creatED instead of the CREATOR because our minds become occupied with worldly things.
DON'T become too lazy to make the DAILY journey to the altar. If we're too lazy to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, God will not honor any other sacrifice that we make.
