As a child growing up in Oakland, I enjoyed when my family would get together and my mother and her siblings told stories of their childhood in Berkeley. Here is one such story I’ve heard many times.
My Uncle Warren and his friend “Butch” gathered some wood and made a raft. They took this raft out on the water at Aquatic Park. They began rowing the raft and as they rowed the raft began falling apart.
Soon the raft was in pieces and my uncle and Butch began scrambling toward the shore. My uncle wasn’t a very good swimmer, so Butch got ahead of him and made it to the shore. My uncle in a panic began flailing and he called out to his friend “Butch I’m drowning, help me”
Butch from the shoreline says to my uncle “Warren you’re close to the shore, stand up man you’ll make it”
I submit this thought, there are times when we are faced with circumstances that appear perilous and we are facing impending doom. In the midst of our panic God will allow those who have gone ahead of us to assure us that we are further along than we think and the danger we think we are facing is no danger at all.
