Today, July 3, is National CROWN Day, a special holiday commemorating the inaugural signing of California's first CROWN Act legislation on July 3, 2019, to “Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.”

The CROWN Act is a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination, which is the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twists, or Bantu knots.

To date, 23 states and numerous municipalities have adopted the CROWN Act, but there is still a lot to be done. Learn more about how you can get involved in protecting our right to wear our crowns proudly in ALL spaces at .

The power of an obedient servant

Thoughts on the message
How did the people know who Jesus was?
There was a man – who had a legion of demons and was now healed. Jesus challenged him to go and tell others. So he went and told everyone in the towns and villages what Jesus did for him.
He was not a gifted speaker. He was not a well-trained disciple. He was just obedient. He just shared what God did for him.
Now, Jesus comes back. People are willing to let Jesus touch them – or in this case they touched Him. The healing that this man received – they received as well.
All because a simple man, with a simple testimony, let his neighbors know what God did for him.

Prayer
Father, we all think our testimony has little value. It has great value. I know that I underestimate what You can do in the lives of others if I simply walk in obedience. So today, I ask for forgiveness for hiding – hiding the goodness You did for me, hiding it from those around me who need to see. This week, I ask for opportunities – and faithfulness – to share what You did for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Vision and Hope in leadership
Jesus exemplifies that Kingdom-style leadership is about having a vision that centres on people. Vision is the response that flows from the question ‘How can I make the world better for others?’ Whether you consider Noah, Moses, David or Daniel, John the Baptist, Mary, Peter or Paul, all these biblical heroes had vision that aimed for cultural transformation.
What’s the vision God has placed in your heart to make tomorrow a better place? Spend time with him and allow God to fill your heart with his plans for you until your heart feels like it will burst if you do not respond.
Vision creates vitality, focuses energy and clarifies purpose. It creates hope and hope creates and energises the vision. Hope brings a sense of expectation that something good will happen and builds a feeling of trust. Hope flows from our faith in God and the confidence and security he provides based upon his truths and promises. Hebrews 11:1 expresses such Kingdom Hope: ‘Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see’. How are you doing on your hope barometer and is it based on biblical truth or earthbound constraints?
A visionary, hope-filled leader is consumed with making tomorrow better than today and settles for nothing less. They refuse to be pessimistic and gloomy because they understand today’s challenges are one step closer to tomorrow’s solution and vision. Discontent breeds hopelessness that, left unchecked, turns into resignation; giving up and conceding defeat that the undesirable is inevitable.
Living from your identity as a beloved child of God gives a sense of peace that you can lean into as the day unfolds. Let’s not allow the circumstances around us to dictate our stance on life and instead remain visionary and full of Kingdom Hope.

Today’s Truth

“ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that all God’s people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 TNIV).

Friend to Friend

One summer I went to a famous art museum. I recall strolling down the aisles, quickly glancing at first one masterpiece and then another. Finally, I decided to stop and look at one particular painting. I don’t even remember which one it was.

The more I looked at the painting, the more I began to see. It was dark on one side and grew lighter on the other. I noticed the expressions on the faces, the longing of a child, the pain of a man, the approaching cloud in the sky, the hues of the clothes, a bare foot, a torn robe, a clenched fist. A story began to unfold before my eyes and it was if I were beginning to see into the heart of the artist.

This reminded me of reading the Bible. It’s like perusing an art gallery. Sometimes I do it quickly, never really stopping to see what the artist intended. And…I miss the story. Like walking briskly through an art gallery, sometimes I grab the Bible and read a few verses before running out the door in the morning or closing my eyes at night. I wonder if I’m the only one. Do you ever do the same?

But God’s Word is a masterpiece, and He speaks to us through every stroke of the writer’s pen. Oh the treasures stored on each page just waiting to be discovered…if we’ll just slow down enough to hear Him speak.

The Hebrew word for Bible is mikra, which means “the calling out of God.” He calls out to us from the pages and speaks to us through the words. The Bible is amazingly profound and yet simple enough for a child to understand. The more time we spend in the Scriptures, the more God will reveal the truths within.

The Bible tells us that the Scriptures are alive. John calls Scripture “the word of life” (I John 1:1). Peter calls Scripture the “living and enduring word of God” (I Peter 1:23). “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edge sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

No matter how long we live, no matter how many times we read through the Bible, God will continue to speak to us through the pages of His Word. His Words are living and bring us life!

So here’s my summer challenge to us all. Slow down. Let’s not read the Bible to just check something off of our to-do list or to stick to a reading plan. Ponder one verse if you need to. Discover the story. Listen to the Artist speak through the pages

As a woman, I can have less-than-pleasant days. If a certain time of the month overtakes me with pain to add to a less than happy mood, I have to bite my tongue more often than normal.
But what happens when the unhappy mood stems from something deeper? Do I just feel off today because I need a Snickers or do have something more spiritual happening? Do I have anxiety or depression?
This, of course, doesn’t just apply to women. We all experience days where our anger bubbles over more than it does on others. And, the issue complicates when we experience several “off days” in a row, perhaps for even months at a time.
How do we tell the difference between plain ol’ bad days and bad symptoms that show an underlying spiritual need? The difference between PMS, mental health, and sin. Also, in terms of mental health, how many bad days do we need in a row to determine if we need to take a deeper look at our mental health and perhaps consult a professional?

PMS: Signs it’s probably just a bad day

Of course, if we lash out at others because of hunger, body aches, or situational circumstances in a 24-hour period, we need to apologize for that poor behavior (Ephesians 4:26). Even when our hormones rage, we have to keep ourselves in check, warn our friends and family members ahead of time about the PMS, and weigh our words carefully.
Apologies aside, these signs may indicate you’ve just experienced PMS in terms of a bad day:

You can placate much of your anger by fulfilling a biological need. For instance, perhaps you are dehydrated or haven’t eating since 7 a.m.

You seem more irritated with immediate items than anything long term. A coworker may be talking too loud by your cubicle today, so you can’t concentrate on your tasks at hand, for instance.

You don’t have many days like this, or you’re not really one to get in a negative mood.

In terms of women and PMS, you may be showing signs of it via bodily symptoms (aches, headaches, nausea). Most women keep a consistent calendar and can track when this will come. Often I’ll get irritated and feel like I need to vomit right around this time. I always seem to forget until I check my calendar, and this assures me my body is just falling into routine.

It just might be one of those days where the circumstances aren’t in your favor. Maybe it poured rain on your way to work or you got caught in traffic and came in late.

Granted, sometimes these signs can accompany you when you fall into one of the below categories. For instance, maybe you’ve let something fester, so your anger releases on something seemingly petty like a coworker microwaving fish, leaving a terrible smell to linger in the office kitchen. One of the best ways to check to see if it’s just for today and not deeper is to analyze your history with bad days. If you often don’t have many, you probably fall into this above category.
But if you have a history of bad days, you might want to take a look at the other two categories to see where you fit.

DAY 2: The Spirit of Jezebel
The spirit of Jezebel seeks to seduce and often works through teaching and prophecy. This spirit seduces the saints into idolatry and immorality. This spirit may use control and manipulation to do it, but ultimately that’s not the end game. Jezebel’s end game is murder. The wages of sin is death, and Jezebel leads people into sin.
Pastors—or anyone, for that matter—who fall into sexual sin are among Jezebel’s trophies. If you are doing anything at all for God, Jezebel wants to cut off your voice. If Jezebel can’t cut off your voice, it will try to pervert your voice by seducing you to defile yourself by tolerating its activity.
Jezebel is not something you can tear down once and for all, but you can break agreement with it and refuse to tolerate it.
Father, I repent for tolerating Jezebel and ask Your forgiveness, in Jesus’s name. I ask You to heal my heart of any detected or undetected hurts, wounds, offenses, pains, pride, rejection, rebellion, or any other open door that may have let or could let Jezebel into my life.
I break Jezebel’s witchcraft, controlling powers, flatteries, deception, word curses, fearful assaults, false accusations, polluted prophetic utterances, subtle seductions, sorceries, intimidations, and other foul operations, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

God and Boundaries

The concept of boundaries comes from the very nature of God. God defines himself as a distinct, separate being, and he is responsible for himself. He defines and takes responsibility for his personality by telling us what he thinks, feels, plans, allows, will not allow, likes, and dislikes.
He also defines himself as separate from his creation and from us. He differentiates himself from others. He tells us who he is and who he is not. For example, he says that he is love and that he is not darkness (1 John 4:16; 1:6).
In addition, he has boundaries within the Trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Spirit are one, but at the same time they are distinct persons with their own boundaries. Each one has his own personhood and responsibilities, as well as a connection with and love for one another (John 17:24).
God also limits what he will allow in his yard. He confronts sin and allows consequences for behavior. He guards his house and will not allow evil things to go on there. He invites people in who will love him, and he lets his love flow outward to them at the same time. The “gates” of his boundaries open and close appropriately.
In the same way he gave us his “likeness” (Gen. 1:26), he gave us personal responsibility within limits. He wants us to “rule over” the earth and to be responsible stewards over the life he has given us. To do that, we need to develop boundaries like God’s.

PURPOSE CHANGES EVERYTHING
New research from the Barna Group reveals that three-quarters of U.S. adults (75 percent) say they are looking for ways to live a more meaningful life. Among Christians, there is an additional question: “What does God want me to do with my life?” According to the Barna study, only 40 percent of practicing Christians say they have a clear sense of God’s calling or purpose for their lives.
It is clear that God is a God of purpose. Throughout the Bible He never does or creates anything without reason. Therefore, He has created you for a reason. You have a purpose.
One of my all-time favorite verses is found in Acts 13:36 which says, “For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his generation, fell asleep” (NASB). Another version says, “David did God’s will during his lifetime. The he died and was buried beside his ancestors.” (NCV)
I love how David had such great clarity about his purpose and calling. I sincerely believe every Christ follower can have the same clarity. You were made to fulfill a purpose and knowing that purpose will give your life meaning.
There are three things we can learn from Acts 13:36 to help us to live with purpose:
1. David served the purposes of God
The summary of David’s life is that he served the purposes of God. David didn’t make life about himself. You are called as a Christian to advance God’s kingdom and you will only have purpose when your highest priority is to find out what God wants you to do.
2. He impacted his own generation.
When you have purpose you will impact people! When you serve the purposes of God, people will be impacted by your service. By living on purpose, you will experience clarity about how to impact people in your generation. Divine purpose impacts people.
3. He fell asleep.
Once David fulfilled God’s purposes for his generation, he went home to heaven. Remember, everything in our world has an expiration date. The milk in your refrigerator has an expiration date, your car registration has an expiration date, and even your body has an expiration date. You may have heard people say, “Nothing lasts forever.” Well, nothing on earth lasts forever. Don’t waste your life. It is a waste if you die and haven’t lived to make an eternal impact.
Living your life on purpose and with intentionality matters! It matters so much to God that he will take notice and commend you for it. Listen to what God said about David in Acts 13:22, “He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will."(emphases mine).
To live a life of purpose, . . . accomplish God’s purposes and do what He asks you.
