Myth: People experiencing homelessness choose to be unhoused.

Fact: The primary drivers of homelessness are economic hardship and lack of affordable housing. Research indicates that 40–60% of homeless individuals are employed but cannot afford housing due to high costs. In areas where rent exceeds 30% of median income, homelessness rates increase significantly.

I recently attended the National Alliance to End Homelessness Conference in Las Angeles California. It was 3 fantastic days of learning and networking with some of the top people in the US. I was chosen for a full scholarship in order to attend.

The Palatka Police Department is asking for volunteers to assist with the annual PIT (Point In Time) count on January 29; a day when volunteers survey the county to count the number of unhoused people. This goes a long way in helping with funding to support our mission in providing shelter and other services to the people who need them.

* Volunteer to assist with the counting on January 29
* Donate items: toiletries, gift cards, wrapped snacks at the Goodwill of Palatka
