"You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God"
Scripture: Matthew 16:13-30

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” All of these things are who Jesus is, and Peter receives it through a gift of God: “[F]lesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.” Lose any one of them, and Jesus is diminished. He’s not just the Christ, he’s not just the Son of a god; he is the Christ, the Son of the living God! And that makes all the difference for us! Our God is alive and active and continues to reveal his Son to us today, that we may be part of that church which the gates of hell will not prevail against.

"Just A Crumb"
Scripture: Matthew 15:21-28

What a contrast to last week’s doubting fearful, disciples! The woman of our text was a social outcast – a Canaanite, a woman, a mere “dog” in the eyes of many. Yet, there she was begging for her sick daughter. Notice - nothing would stop her from seeking mercy and healing from Jesus and in the end, she receives it all. Jesus identifies her as one with “great faith.” We can learn a lot from this woman, but more than that, about Jesus. He came for all, and He hears our persistent prayer offered in faith. Just a crumb of God's mercy is enough.

"Lord, Save Me!"
Scripture: Matthew 14:22-33

When Jesus reveals His divine presence to His disciples by walking on the sea, they can only conclude: “Truly You are the Son of God.” As long as Peter keeps his eyes on Jesus, he also is able to walk on the water. Like Peter, we often look away from the object of our faith and focus on our problems and doubts. Although we know the Son of God is with us and provides for all our needs, we still worry and fear. Jesus states, “Take heart; It is I. Do not be afraid.” His powerful arm reaches out to steady us and guide us into His safe harbor. (from the Lutheran Study Bible, 2009-CPH)
