Let the Lower Lights Be Burning

The hymn “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning,” written by Philip P. Bliss, reminds us of our responsibility as Christians to guide others to salvation.

God is the great Lighthouse, shining His truth through Jesus Christ for all to see (2 Corinthians 4:6; John 8:12). His light reaches far into the darkness, offering hope and direction to a lost world.

Christians are the “lower lights” along the shore. While we are not the source of light, we are called to reflect it through our lives, our words, and our example (Matthew 5:14–16). Our purpose is to help guide those who are searching for truth.

Sin is like a dark and stormy ocean, where many souls are lost and struggling. They are looking for light, looking for hope. Without guidance, they remain in danger (John 3:19).

The hymn urges us: “Trim your lamp.” In other words, keep your faith strong and your light shining brightly. Someone may be depending on your example to find their way to safety.

Let us remember: we have been brought out of darkness into God’s marvelous light. Now, it is our duty and our privilege to shine so that others may come to the safe harbor of salvation.
