Keep the Temple Clean
"Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves... So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts..."
John 2:13–15
"Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there..."
Matthew 21:12
Did Jesus cleanse the temple once—or twice?
John places the temple cleansing at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Matthew, Mark, and Luke place it at the end. While some scholars think John simply moved the event for thematic reasons, many believe there were actually two separate temple cleansings.
If that's true, it reveals something powerful: Even after Jesus first drove out the corruption, the clutter crept back in. The temple which was meant to be a house of prayer, returned to being a marketplace.
In the same way, when Jesus saves us, He cleanses the temple of our hearts. He drives out sin, shame, and selfishness. But unless we actively partner with the Holy Spirit, the old habits can sneak back in. Just as the temple needed a second cleansing, we need daily surrender to the Holy Spirit to stay clean. Not out of fear, but out of love and honor for the One who made us His dwelling place.
Is there anything Jesus once cleansed from your life that’s started creeping back in?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for cleansing my heart and making me new. I invite the Holy Spirit to help me guard what You have made holy. Keep me sensitive to Your voice and quick to repent. I want my life to remain a place where You are welcomed and honored. Amen.
