Church Family, please keep Phillip & Jane, Marty & Cindy Hicks close in thought and prayer, as we grieve with them, the passing of Whitaker. Our comfort comes in knowing she is in the arms of Jesus.

Austen Whitaker Hicks

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Austen Whitaker Hicks, a precious soul whose brief but bright life touched everyone she met. Born on April 18, 2025, in Durham, North Carolina, Whitaker graced this world with her beautiful smile, a radiant light that promised so much joy and love.

Whitaker lived a big life in her short time here with us. From Easter sunrise service on North Myrtle Beach to the polo fields of Charlottesville Virginia, she packed in as many experiences as she could. No experience meant more to her than spending time with her mommy and daddy. Her striking, beautiful blue eyes melted her parent’s hearts, and her strong spirit was admired and felt in every room. She was a true daddy’s girl from the very beginning, and he gladly became her personal assistant in life. Her mommy was wrapped around her finger.

Whitakers physical disabilities never interfered with her living life to the fullest. Her strength, determination and resilience were truly inspiring to all of those around her. Whitaker always surpassed expectations and taught so many of us how to love unconditionally. She continued to teach us through her last breaths here on Earth.

Her life came with unfair challenges, but you would never know it from the love she shared. Whitaker was a sweet yet fierce presence. We will miss her more than words can express.

Whitaker passed away in her birthplace of Durham on June 7, 2026 in the arms of her mommy and daddy. She is deeply missed by her loving parents, Phillip Greyson Hicks and Jane Winston Hicks, who cherished every moment spent with their beloved daughter. She is also survived by her paternal grandparents, Marshall Hicks, Jr and Cynthia Newton Hicks, whose adoration and care added to her life's treasure. On her maternal side, her grandparents Francis Winston and Tammy Ellis Winston hold her memory close in their hearts. Whitaker’s circle of love extended to aunts, uncles, and cousins too numerous to name, each of whom treasured her brief, shining presence.

The family invites those who wish to celebrate Whitaker's life to join in visitation and funeral services on June 10, 2026. The visitation will be held at 10:00 AM at Grassy Creek Baptist Church, located at 9412 Grassy Creek Road in Bullock, NC 27507. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM at Grassy Creek Baptist Church. The family also invites everyone to Whitaker’s home at 601 College Street in Oxford following the service.

Flowers are welcomed and appreciated or memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or March of Dimes in Whitakers’ name.

Though our hearts are heavy and our tears many, the memory of Austen Whitaker Hicks remains a beacon of innocence, pure love, and the unspoken promise of hope carried forward in the hearts of all who loved her. May her beautiful smile forever shine bright in our souls.

The family also thanks her Duke University medical team and Transitions Hospice for all of their dedicated care and support.

June Church Project: Putting together breakfast bags which will be delivered to Granville County seniors who receive Meals on Wheels through the Granville County Senior Center. Around 65 meals are delivered to homebound Granville County residents who are 60 or older and unable to leave their homes due to health issues. Our breakfast bags will supplement the meals they receive five days a week.

Please collect the following: individual packets of instant oatmeal and grits, breakfast bars or granola bars, packets of instant hot chocolate mix, and juice boxes. Please place in the collection room before June 21 so that the Women's Toolbox Ministry can assemble. Our goal is 65 bags.

“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4)

Our church family extends its deepest, heartfelt sympathy to J.W. Currin in the passing of his brother-in-law, Marshall Parham Jr. Please keep the family close in thought and prayer.

Marshall T. Parham, Jr
May 17, 1952 — June 4, 2026
Oxford, NC

Marshall Thomas Parham Jr., of Oxford, NC, passed away at home surrounded by family on June 4, 2026. He was the son of the late Marshall T. Parham Sr. and Helen Jean Bradsher Parham of Granville County, NC. He is also preceded in death by his late wife of 51 years, Beverly Currin Parham, with whom we know he is rejoicing in Heaven today.

He was a devoted husband to Beverly, a wonderful father to his girls, a proud grandfather, and a loving, nurturing brother. Marshall was a proud North Carolina State University graduate, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in education. He was a former dump truck driver for the state, an employee and supervisor at Bandag, and a school teacher at Vance Senior High School for 18 years. Upon retiring from teaching, Marshall fulfilled his lifelong dream of running a construction business. He worked alongside his late father-in-law, James W. “Bill” Currin, as owners and operators of Parham and Currin Construction Company running heavy equipment, clearing lots, digging septic systems, and digging footings. Marshall was also a longstanding member of Dexter Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School, served as a youth leader, and served as a deacon.

Marshall had a bubbly spirit and knew no stranger. He was devoted to his family and shared the love of Christ with them. He was a diligent and hardworking man who believed if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right. Music was one of Marshall’s lifelong passions. He played in a band during his college years and continued playing guitar throughout his life. One of his greatest joys was serenading his beloved wife, Beverly, with songs that never failed to make her smile. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, watching sports, and relaxing with his furry friends through the years, Josh, Coco, Mac, and Buttons.

Marshall is survived by his children, Lori Nutt (Chris) and Nori Brooks (Brian) and his grandchildren, Caleb Nutt and Ali Wilson. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Satterwhite (Joe), Ruby Sue Parham, and Marie Hicks (Steve) and his brother, Ben Parham (Karen). He is also survived by his brother-in-law J.W. Currin (Mechelle), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will all miss him dearly.

A memorial service officiated by Rev. Wayne Clark will be held at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan on Tuesday, June 9 at 3:00pm, with a visitation prior to the service at 1:00pm. Family will also receive guests at the home of Brian and Nori Brooks. Flowers are greatly appreciated, and memorial donations to the Granville County Animal Shelter are also welcomed in honor of Marshall’s love for animals. Mail or deliver to 515 Commerce Drive, Oxford, NC 27565.

The Parham family is honorably being cared for by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan of 503 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565. Online memeorials are at: www.gnvfuneralhome.com
