St. John's United Church of Christ of Owosso

St. John's United Church of Christ of Owosso No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here. We are an inclusive church, known in town as "a little church with a BIG HEART."

As an inclusive church, we welcome everyone who is interested in following the example of Jesus Christ. Our long history of being an inclusive church in Owosso dates back to 1894. We offer Communion on the first Sunday of every month, with an "open table" which means all are welcome to take part. Our Food Pantry has been in operation since the year 2000. Our free food distribution for Shiawassee County residents takes place on the third Tuesday of every month, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

Please join us for church this Sunday, at 10:30am, in person, or from the comfort of your home via Zoom.

This Sunday we will consider the story of Philip and the Ethiopian Eu**ch. Eu**chs were not allowed in the Temple according to Jewish law, and they were seen as defective people and an afront to God. Yet Philip, led by an angel saw past these prejudices and welcomed them into the church with Baptism. Based on Acts 8:26-38.

🇨🇺 The United Church of Christ is proud to co-sponsor the Cuba Faith Action Hour, happening Monday June 15th!

The humanitarian crisis in Cuba continues to worsen. Church partners report severe shortages of medicines, medical supplies, fuel, and food that are affecting communities across the island. Hospitals struggle to obtain essential supplies, blackouts regularly disrupt daily life, and many families are finding it increasingly difficult to meet basic needs. For some, these shortages have become a matter of life and death.

At a time when the stakes are so high for the Cuban people, Congress needs to hear from constituents who support policies that promote peace and help alleviate suffering.

This Sunday we will celebrate Communion, as we reflect on why communion is important. What does it mean to have a seat at the table, particularly for those who have been marginalized? Based on Mark 14:22-25.

🏳️‍⚧️ Each month, UCC experts unpack a complex justice issue through our series.

🏳️‍🌈 This Pride Month, the Rev. Elder Carmarion D. Anderson, Minister for Congregational Leadership at the National Ministries United Church of Christ reflects on the church's responsibility to embody God's love for our transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary siblings.

It is Pride Month. And FCC Chair Brendan Carr wants TV ratings to label shows that include transgender and nonbinary characters as if they are dangerous content. Trans people are our neighbors and our fellow congregants. More than 5 million children in this country have LGBTQ+ parents. They are not a danger to anyone.

In this sermon, Pastor Mike reflects on our participation in the Owosso Pride event and the importance of inclusive community. Just three years ago, St. John's was the only church at Owosso Pride — this year, we were one of five!

Jesus identified the greatest commandments as loving God and loving our neighbor, and repeatedly warned against judging or condemning one another. At St. John's, following these teachings — the ones Jesus himself prioritized — is what it means to be Christ-like. We reject the approach of some Christians who elevate other scripture passages in ways that unnecessarily drive LGBTQIA+ people into despair.

We are also deeply concerned that our government is actively targeting transgender people through unjust laws restricting healthcare, education, legal recognition, military service, and even basic visibility. We oppose these efforts as unjust, unnecessary, and unloving.

Pastor Mike also explains why a rainbow flag is included on our front sign year-round: it's a visible promise to LGBTQIA+ neighbors that they are welcomed and affirmed here as their true selves, and invited to participate fully in our church community at every level — without unjust discrimination.
