Nutty Buddy Thanksgiving
I remember Thanksgiving past and the huge family gatherings of joyful mess and Nutty Buddy Pudd’n Pie. Oh the bliss, oh the gliss, oh the list of things to prepare for that gathering glory of goodness. When my grandparents moved back from Fenton, Missouri after Grandpa retired from that Chrysler automobile factory my mother would be on the phone with her every evening. Organizing this turkey celebration two months in advance, I will do the cranberry salad she would say, and on and on it would go. The call would happen like a train timetable only this was immediately following Marcia Yockey’s weather report.
The big day arrived and before you would gather the troops around the table one of the boys would surely do something to get in trouble and that mischief seemed to escalate to grandpa taking off the belt just before the blessing. Now that is some blissful mess as you passed the food around the table and spilled the tea on mommas new dress.
My mother always seemed to get the last word and this one happened in the car on the long ride home. She would say something to the affect of ‘Life Sure Get’s Te-Jus, Don’t It’ and then you would hear ‘The sun comes up and the sun goes down, the hands on the clock keep agoin’ round, I just get up and it’s time to lay down, Life gets tee-jus, don’t it, hmm. Man, those were the good ole days,
So the next day I had to go to my cousin and apologize for kicking him in the shin. This was a thoroughly devastating setback of failure, a loss of the championship match. Man, did I have to let go…
Letting Go of Bitterness
Bitterness often takes root quietly, fed by unresolved hurt and unspoken disappointment. Left unchecked, it grows into patterns of anger and division that weigh heavily on our hearts.
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Ephesians 4:31–32
