Romans 12:1–2 -- "Changing the Way You Think"

Every day, something is shaping the way we think.

The culture around us constantly tells us what matters, what success looks like, and how we should live. Paul warns us, “be not conformed to this world.” Then he gives the alternative: “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

God changes our lives by changing our thinking. And one of the primary ways He renews our minds is through His Word. The more Scripture fills our minds, the more we begin recognizing thoughts and attitudes that don't belong there. God's truth exposes the lies we have believed and replaces them with what is true.

That's why Bible reading is about much more than completing a chapter. We are allowing God's thoughts to reshape our thoughts. Before you make a decision, ask, “What does God's Word say?” When your emotions are pulling you in one direction, ask, “What is true?”

Don't allow the world to squeeze you into its mold. Fill your mind with God's truth and allow Him to transform you from the inside out.

James 1:22–25
Don't Just Look, Do Something!
James compares God's Word to a mirror.
When you look into a physical mirror, it shows you what is really there. If your hair is a mess or if there is a blemish on your face, the mirror isn't being unkind. It is simply telling you the truth.
God's Word does the same thing spiritually.
Scripture reveals attitudes that need correcting, sins that need confessing, priorities that need rearranging, and even areas where we need to grow.
But James points out something almost humorous. Imagine looking into a mirror, noticing something obviously wrong, walking away, and doing absolutely nothing about it!
Yet we can do the exact same thing with the Bible.
We read it. God speaks to us. We recognize what needs to change, and then we continue living exactly as before.
James says, “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.” The purpose of Bible reading isn't information; it is transformation. When God's Word shows you something today, respond to it. Confess the sin. Make the change. Forgive the person. Obey the command. Take the step.
Don't just look into the mirror. Do something about what you see.

Psalm 119:129–131 -- "Hungry for More"

“I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.”

That's not just a little bit of interest. That's hunger. The psalmist had developed such an appetite for God's truth that he longed for it.

What do you hunger for? We naturally make room for the things we really desire. We find time for our hobbies, entertainment, and interests. Our schedules often reveal our appetites.

The psalmist had discovered the wonder of God's Word: “Thy testimonies are wonderful.” And the more he discovered, the more he wanted.

Perhaps one of the best prayers we could pray is simply: “Lord, make me hungry for Your Word.” Not just disciplined enough to read it. Not just knowledgeable enough to explain it. “God, give me a heart that wants to hear from You!”

God's Word gives light. It gives understanding. It reveals God's heart and directs our lives. And here is the wonderful thing about spiritual hunger: the more we feed on God's Word, the greater our appetite for it can become.

Taste its sweetness today. Then come back tomorrow hungry for more.

Jeremiah 15:16 -- "The Joy of God's Word"

Jeremiah said, “Thy words were found, and I did eat them.” Then he describes what happened: “Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.”

Jeremiah's circumstances certainly weren't joyful. As a matter of fact, his ministry was difficult. His message was often rejected. He experienced loneliness, opposition, and discouragement. Yet in the middle of difficult circumstances, he found joy in God's Word.

There is an important distinction here. God's Word doesn't promise that everything happening around us will be pleasant. It gives us something deeper — a joy that is not dependent upon everything going our way. There will be days when circumstances are bitter. People will disappoint us. Plans will change. Burdens will come. Questions will remain unanswered. But God's promises are still sweet.

When everything around you seems uncertain, you can open your Bible and find a God who hasn't changed. His love hasn't changed. His promises haven't changed. His faithfulness hasn't changed.

Don't allow the bitterness of your circumstances to rob you of the sweetness of God's Word. There is still joy and rejoicing to be found there today.

Ezekiel 3:1–3 -- "Eat What God Has Given You"

God gave Ezekiel an unusual command: “eat this roll.” Before Ezekiel could speak God's Word to others, he first had to take it into himself.

That is an important lesson for every Christian!

It is easy to read the Bible thinking about someone else. We hear a sermon and immediately think, “I wish so-and-so could hear this!” We find a verse that perfectly addresses someone else's problem.

But God's Word must first become personal. Before we give it out, we must take it in.

Ezekiel obeyed, and he said, “it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.”

There is a sweetness that comes when God's truth moves from being words on a page to truth received personally into our heart.

As you read today, resist the temptation to ask who else needs this passage. Ask instead: “What is God saying to me?” Is there something to believe? Something to obey? Something to confess? Something to change? Something to share?

God wants His Word in more than your hands or your head. He wants it in your heart. Take it in today—and discover its sweetness for yourself.

Proverbs 24:13–14 -- "Something Better Than Honey"

Solomon tells his son to eat honey “because it is good.” Then he immediately makes the comparison: “So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul.” The truth here is this: honey satisfies the mouth, but God's wisdom satisfies the soul.

Our world offers endless sources of advice. Everyone seems to have an opinion about how we should live, what we should value, how we should raise our families, and what should make us happy.

But information is not the same thing as wisdom. True wisdom begins with God and is found by viewing life through the truth He has revealed. That is one reason daily Bible reading matters so much. Scripture gradually shapes the way we think. It teaches us to see circumstances, relationships, priorities, temptation, success, suffering, and eternity from God's perspective.

And Solomon gives us a wonderful promise: when we find this wisdom, “there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.” God's wisdom never leaves us empty.

Enjoy the sweetness of God's Word today. But don't just enjoy it, live by it! There is nothing sweeter than discovering that God's way really is best.
