Scripture and Reflection for week one of Still Here:
Scripture:
2 Timothy 4:16
2 Corinthians 1:8
Philippians 1:1-2
Philippians 1:3-5
Philippians 1:6
Philippians 1:9-11
Reflection:
1. We often put leaders like Paul on a pedestal. Have you ever felt that admitting to mental or emotional struggles (like anxiety or depression) would make you look like a “bad Christian” or a “weak believer”? How does Paul’s admission in 2 Corinthians 1:8 change your view on this? Does it give you permission to be more honest about your own battles?
2. Dr. Robert Emmons suggests we cannot feel envy and gratitude at the same time. Try to identify one “toxic emotion” you have felt this week (envy, resentment, fear, bitterness). What is one specific thing you can be grateful for that might “block” that emotion? (Even the simple things count!)
3. Paul considered the Philippians his “partners” in the faith. Who are the “partners” in your life right now? Who are the people who would “send a ship” if you were drifting? If you can’t name someone, what is one concrete step you can take this week to start building those connections? (i.e. having deeper conversations with friends/family, speaking with a youth leader, or a pastor at church, having honest conversations with a mental health professional.)
4. Philippians 1:6 promises God will finish the work He started in you. How does this promise help you when you feel like you are “failing” in your spiritual or mental health journey? How does it change your perspective to know that your current brokenness is just a chapter, not the end of the book?
Action Step: This week, write a short message to one of your “partners in the gospel.” Don’t ask them for anything. Just thank them for being in your life, using Paul’s words: “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.” Let them know they are part of your anchor!
