Evening Program on Christian Nationalism
First Presbyterian Union Church, North Avenue and Temple Street in Owego

As we approach July 4th, come and watch a thoughtful, biblical program on what it means to be faithful to Jesus Christ (and what it doesn’t) while living in a nation that we love. We will be showing the video: "Is Christian Nationalism Christian?" by Adam Hamilton, the senior pastor at The Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City. Understand what Christian nationalism is and how it compares to the message of Jesus and the person of Jesus. Pastors Carolyn and Bruce will lead the discussion.

As citizens and believers in this democracy that we cherish so deeply, we must advocate for peace with our representatives and leaders. It is not enough to say we have prayed. We must also act. For it is very possible that the negotiations will fail because of recalcitrance on both sides, and the president will move to reenter this immoral war. At that critical juncture, as disciples of Jesus Christ called to be peacemakers in the world, we must answer vocally and in unison: No. Not in our name. Not at this moment. Not with our country.

In his Easter sermon Pope Leo invited the world to a prayer vigil for peace to be held today, Saturday, April 11 at noon. The vigil will be streamed live on the Vatican's YouTube channel. The vigil is expected to be about one hour in length.

The prayer vigil will be shown live at the First Presbyterian Union Church, oldest church in Owego, at North Avenue and Temple Street in Owego. The public is invited to join others for this prayer vigil for peace.

This time of prayer for peace is happening when the USA and Israel are at war with Iran with Israel also attacking Lebanon. There is a temporary cease fire in Iran, but Israel continues to attack Lebanon.

On Easter President Donald Trump posted the following message on his Truth Social: “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F**kin Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The Pope and leaders of the World Council of Churches already had been urging a cease fire before Easter with the war being a violation of international law. Traditional NATO allies (Spain, Italy and France) have refused to allow bases located in their countries to be used in the war. President Trump's threats on Easter are seen as war crimes against civilians. Iran is already sorting through the wreckage from U.S.-Israeli strikes, which have exacted a heavy toll on its civilian infrastructure. The New York Times has verified damage to 22 schools and 17 health care facilities, a fraction of the devastation in the war so far. Lebanon is also devastated.

Join us for prayers with the Pope this Saturday noon and beyond.

The Rev. Dr. Greg Garis, Lead Presbyter for Transformation for our Susquehanna Valley Presbytery, has invited others in our Presbytery to join us for this prayer vigil for peace.
