Today we begin a new chapter of the Bible, Lamentations. Lamentations is commonly attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, and it mourns the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple that we just read about in the book of Jeremiah. Chapters 1-4 of Lamentations are each elaborate acrostic poems using the Hebrew alphabet. Each new line of chapters 1 and 2 use a new letter from the alphabet in Hebrew. Chapter three triples this pattern (that's why it's 66 verses long instead of 22). Chapter 4 returns to the earlier pattern of one line per letter. Finally, chapter 5 of Lamentations keeps the same length as previous chapters (22 verses) but does not strictly adhere to the alphabet-pattern of 1-4. While we can't see this pattern when the text is translated into English, it's still wonderful to know that this scripture is put together so well and so beautifully.
