Oviedo Presbyterian Church

Oviedo Presbyterian Church A small church with a big heart! We are a family of Christ followers known for our love of Christ, love for one another, and reaching out to those in need.

We value authenticity above formality, and honest relationships above token handshakes. We don't pretend to be perfect, and we don't expect that you are either. If you just want to get lost in the crowd, we may not be the right place for you! A church is not a building or something you attend, it is something you become a part of. If you want to be more than a number, to love and be loved, to grow

in your faith, and to share your gifts and talents, we invite you to check us out. Whether you are a seasoned saint or a questioning seeker, there is a place for you. Our Sunday morning worship has a touch of tradition but without being stuffy. We worship in new songs of praise as well as hymns that have withstood the test of time. We preach and teach the Word of God in honest ways that connect with real life and real people. Like God’s love, we minister across the generations, rather than targeting just one. We believe that worship is something that we participate in rather than just watch. Some of our older members dress in suits or dresses while some of the youth wear jeans. If you wear something "corporate casual" you'll fit right in. Who you are is more important that what you wear! Come as you are, we do!

Sermon: Standing Tall on Solid Ground
1 Peter 2:2-12
Sunday, June 7, 2026

Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones let yourselves be built into a spiritual house. From 1 Peter 1:23

Where we begin matters. Just as ancient builders began with a cornerstone, every life is built upon one starting point or another. Throughout Scripture, the cornerstone represents God's plan and faithfulness and is offered as a firm foundation. In this passage, Peter identifies Jesus as the chosen and precious cornerstone upon whom God's people must build. Not every foundation can survive life's storms, and Jesus presents a clear choice: either we build our lives on him, or we do not. When Jesus becomes more than a decorative tradition and truly serves as our foundation, he provides stability, direction, and hope. As we build our lives upon him, we increasingly resemble him and become living stones as we join together to reveal God's love to the world.

1 Peter 1:23-2:5
Sunday, May 31, 2026

Just as a fly does not belong in soup, there are things that do not belong in the life of one who has been born anew in Christ. Rather than merely cleaning us up, God gives us a new birth through His living and enduring word. Jesus emphasized this repeatedly when speaking to Nicodemus, and Peter reminds us that we have been born anew through imperishable seed. As we grow in Christ, we should eagerly rid ourselves of what does not belong and develop a hunger for God's goodness, just as a hungry infant longs for milk. As God's love fills our lives, old habits lose their appeal, and we grow into the people God created and redeemed us to be.

Sermon: The Big Question
Scripture: Acts 2
Sunday, May 24, 2026

All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” From Acts 2:12

“What does all this mean?” That question was asked at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit filled Jesus’ followers with power and bold proclamation as they were surrounded by heavenly sound and fire, and it is still the question we must ask today. Too often Christianity becomes reduced to doctrines, buildings, and programs rather than living in the transforming reality of the risen Jesus working through Spirit-filled believers. Jesus’ followers had been meeting, praying, and organizing themselves, but Pentecost revealed that God was not interested merely in continuing things—God was creating something new. Fearful disciples became bold witnesses, proclaiming Jesus as Lord through the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost reminds us that the Christian life is not about what we can do for God but about what God can do through us. Though we often resist with excuses about our inability, time, resources, or worthiness, God answers every excuse with his own sufficiency. Therefore, we are called to pray, “Jesus, my life is yours. Forgive me for trying to make it mine. What do you want me to do?”

You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. From 1 Peter 1:23

Note: Our apologies for the distant camera. Our primary camera refused to work.

Where do we go to make the truly important decisions in life? Cemeteries, where we are confronted with our limited time on earth? Trash day, when the streets are lined with things our neighbors, and we once thought were so important? Jesus teaches us to store up treasure in heaven because of our human trait of often pursuing what is ultimately worthless and so ignoring what is eternal. This passage from 1st Peter calls us to live in light of God’s eternal purposes, freed from our previous shortsighted and selfish past. Jesus reveals true value through his love for sinners, his humility, his cross, and his resurrection. As we set our hope fully on the grace he brings, we are freed from futile living and transformed from self-centeredness to love, from pride to humility, and from temporary priorities to lives shaped by the living and enduring Word of God.

Sanctified by the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ. From 1 Peter 1:2

We are called and created to become something far beyond our own strength, yet Scripture assures us that we are not left alone, for God is at work within us through the Holy Spirit, sanctifying us to become more like Christ. To be sanctified is not simply to follow rules, but to have our hearts transformed so deeply that living and loving like Jesus becomes our deepest desire. Unfortunately, we often settle for far less than the fullness of life God intends, remaining weighed down by sin rather than soaring in the fruit of the Spirit. Yet through Jesus’ cross and resurrection, and through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, we are invited into newness of life. Yet through Jesus’ cross and resurrection, and through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, we are invited into newness of life.

Sprinkled With His Blood
1 Peter 1:1-9
Sunday, May 3, 2026

Blood may seem strange to modern ears, yet throughout Scripture it speaks of life, covenant, and redemption. The sacrifices of Abel, the Passover lamb, the blood sprinkled by Moses, and sacrifices at the Temple all pointed forward to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God without blemish, whose precious blood brings forgiveness and new life. God the Father chooses us, the Spirit sanctifies us for obedience, and the Son’s blood establishes the new covenant and marks us as His own.

Present or Passing Through?
1 Peter 1:1-9
Sunday, April 26, 2026

Do you ever feel out of place? Scripture reminds us that, in a real sense, we are—because as followers of Jesus, our true home is with God, and this life is “the time of our exile.” Yet we are not ordinary or forgotten. We are here for a purpose. We are called and equipped to live as people formed by a different kingdom. Jesus himself entered our world as the ultimate exile, revealing God's grace through love, humility, and sacrifice. We are given a purpose on our journey—to reveal God's compassion and grace, and his kingdom wherever God sends us.

Therefore, Go
Matthew 28:16-20
Sunday, April 19, 2026

Easter, the resurrection of Jesus, is not merely a past event to remember or a doctrine to affirm, but a present reality that continues to shape our lives and purpose. When the disciples see Jesus where he told them, they worship him—even though they still have doubts. Perhaps because of their doubts, Jesus declares that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. And in Jesus’ power, not their own ability, he tells them, “Therefore go."

Jesus' resurrection is not an ending but a beginning. He gives his disciples a huge task: to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to live according to everything he has commanded. Though they may question whether they are capable of such a calling, Jesus does not leave them to carry it alone. Instead, he gives them a promise to hold onto in every challenge—that he is with them always, even to the end of the age. This is the same call and promise Jesus gives to us: to go - to go and make disciples - in his power and in his presence.

(Our apologies for our main camera being down today. Instead of a front row seat for the sermon, you'll have the back row seat experience, which some prefer anyway. ;-) )
